Self defense refers to any manner of techniques geared to defending yourself in a threatening situation. Self defense techniques like karate also build strength and endurance, and are great ways to keep fit. Various training methods can include kickboxing, karate, taekwondo, and other martial arts. Self defense can also refer to the basics of personal protection, such as using weapons like pepper spray, a stun gun, alarm, taser, or knife. They are all geared toward certain age groups and demographics. For instance, many are geared toward teaching women the basics of self defense moves. Others are meant for the entire family unit. Classes like kickboxing can be found in gyms and fitness centers, while karate classes are taught within martial arts centers. Karate is one of the oldest forms of self defense, a system of combat developed on the island of Okinawa in Japan. Self defense can be learned through martial arts programs, including karate, kickboxing, jujitsu, ninjitsu, and hapkido. Many of these classes will be aimed to train women on the moves and tactics they can use on the street if they are ever in a tough situation. Many martial arts schools will have mixed ways on how to teach students the moves. Some may watch videos to show the different techniques and then have the students practice the moves in the classroom. While many women may decide to have stun guns or pepper spray on them at all times it can still be a good idea to learn different karate and kickboxing moves. You can call a school and ask about what weapons they teach how to use or what supplies you will need to bring to the class. Martial arts training will last for multiple sessions in order for the students to learn different tactics and moves. If you're interested in learning self defense you can look online or in a phone book for karate, kickboxing, or jujitsu classes. You can either visit their location in person or call to ask what nights they offer classes, when a new session begins, and how much it costs. Compare this information with other schools you find to see where the best fit is for you. Some may let you visit a class to see if you like the teacher and the type of tips you'll be given on how to defend yourself. You can ask if you can get your money back within a certain period of time if you decide that you don't like the class or if another obligation comes up.
