Terms Used by Septic Cleaning and Repairing Firms

Septic systems process waste in areas where sewers cannot reach. Many rural homes have these units attached to drain pipes from bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms. A large concrete tank and liner go into the leach field to process raw sewage. Town and state laws regulate the size and location of where a house is built. These residential units need cleaning and pumping out every one to ten years depending on the number of people in the home and the gallon capacity. It's important for homeowners to understand the terms maintenance and repair companies use.

  • Baffle – Before drain water reaches the storage container, there's a smaller box with a flap that keeps solid waste in that container. The baffle is usually before the drain pipe enters the concrete or plastic box and again where the leach field pipe begins. This baffle should be inspected by a professional when the septic system is pumped and inspected every few years. If repairs are needed, the professional tells you.
  • Cesspool – A cesspool is usually no longer allowed in most states, but there are locations where old cesspools fall under grandfathered laws. These pits contain raw sewage that does not drain anywhere and therefore must be cleaned out frequently.
  • Digester – Bacteria help convert solid fecal matter to liquid so that it can exit to the leach field. The rest of the matter sinks to the bottom. Yeast from beer works efficiently, especially if you home brew and have liquid yeast in the bottom of your carboy. Pour some into your toilet and flush it into the raw sewage.
  • Leach Field – Liquids from the septic tank flow through the holes and out to the leach field where they slowly filter through the sand and bedrock layers as natural filtering before entering the ground water.

Septic tank system cleaning and repair is often necessary. As you may already know, a septic tank is essentially an underground metal tank that is used to collect sewage water from a residential home or commercial building. The waste that collects in the tank then decomposes over time. Also, a sewage maintenance truck can be called in to pump or drain the waste out of the septic system. This is sometimes done to prevent the tank from overflowing, and spilling out onto the property. There are times when a septic tank requires repairs. After all, the proper disposal of waste is very important, and if a system is leaking, it is imperative to assess the damage. Professionals that repair and clean septic tanks often examine the system, and then check the building or home’s plumbing in order to find out what is wrong. These experts may use aerator tools, replacement pipes, and sewage digester chemicals to deal with the system. If waste is leaching into the field or property, a major collection of sewage can form. Therefore it is certainly wise to address sewer and septic tank issues and underground cesspools immediately. A plumber may even be called to repair or replace the pump that regulates the tank. Depending on the problem with the septic tank, specific care and cleaning is often necessary, and sometimes repairs are essential. You will not have difficulty finding more information on septic tanks and systems online. There are official websites that address tank replacement, repairs and cleaning. Contact information is typically provided as well.
