Sewing Instruction Terms to Know

If you're thinking of taking a sewing or dress making class, you may want to brush up on some basics before your first meeting. Knowing the following terms and definitions will create a strong frame of reference for learning new techniques and lessons.

  • Back Tack - If you're following a pattern, you may notice instructions that ask for back tacking. Back tack is what is done when you are done sewing a line of thread, such as a hem, in order to secure that line of stitching. This can be done with a sewing machine or by hand.
  • Fashion Fabric - When making a dress or other clothes, there can be several types of fabric used. The fashion fabric is what appears on the outside of the garment. This is opposed to the liner fabric, which generally remains unseen.
  • Pre-Shrinking - When making custom garments such as baby clothing or dresses, the fabric may require pre-shrinking. Depending on the pattern and instructions for fabric type, washing and drying the fabric sheets may be required.
  • Test Seam - Before you make your first project, your instructor may have you use the sewing machine to make a test seam in class. Test seams help familiarize you with the machine and the fabric with which you are working. Some garments and fabrics may require specific seams to prevent pulling and other problems.
  • Stay Stitching - Stay stitching is performed on the edges of more delicate fabrics and dresses to ensure that a hem or effect keeps its shape during the construction process.
