Important Sewing Machine Repair Terms

Sewing is a fun and useful hobby that can save money, but doing the work by hand can be time consuming. An easy and cheap way to sew is to purchase a refurbished machine from a licensed dealer. If you are thinking of buying or have recently purchased a refurbished device it is important to know the following terms.

  • Bobbin – This is a cylinder that holds the bottom thread and is a vital element of these devices. Many problems arise from improperly installing or winding the bobbin. It is important to keep this area dust free because dirt that gets caught in this area can create long lasting problems that will need to be fixed by a repair expert. Bobbins can be found used and restored at very reasonable prices.
  • Pressure Foot – This is small metal device that exerts pressure downward on the material as it passes over the feed dogs. In this way, these two parts work together to keep the material in place and move it forward quickly and efficiently.
  • Needle Plate – This is a small metal piece that is designed to protect the bobbin area and the underside of the device. It also keeps the material from getting jammed up in the feed dogs.
  • Feed Dogs – These are located underneath the plate. They are composed of thin metal teeth whose job is to pull the fabric along between stitches. Over time and with heavy use, the teeth can become worn down and are no longer able to pull the material through. In this case, these need to be restored by an expert.
  • Pedal – This is a device that controls the stop and go and speed of your machine. A problem here will need to be fixed by a licensed dealer or repair specialist.

Whether you sew for fun or as a profession, your sewing machine is a necessary and expensive investment to make. This tool needs to be treated right in terms of maintenance and prompt repairs to ensure you keep that investment in good condition for as long as possible. From the motor and pedal to the needle and other parts, every bit of your sewing machine deserves the very best attention if you are to get the greatest value from your machine. This article will provide tips on basic sewing machine maintenance as well as how to find the right repair shop to restore, refurbish or replace your machine and install new parts when your machine needs fixing. When it comes to regular sewing machine maintenance, your best source is the manual that comes with the machine. This book should have been received when you bought the new tool from the store. However, if you have a used or wholesale sewing machine, it's possible the manual is no longer available. If this is the case, try going online to find a new copy that will tell you when to service the various parts of the machine. Most sewing machines need a regular oiling and lint removal to keep them running in top condition and prevent repairs. Sewing machine oil is a special product that can be found in sewing machine stores or repair shops. The needle, thread and fabric make stitches and this chain reaction can lead to lint buildup in your machine. By removing this lint regularly, you can restore your machine to its original condition and refurbish the performance of your machine. Other repairs will probably require the help of a specialist who fixes machines, installs parts and provides basic maintenance tasks.
