Important Terms about Sheet Metal Fabrication

Sheet metal fabrication isn't a subject most people know much about, so if you're new to this field, there are some terms and concepts that you may not understand. To help you, we'll define some of these terms in the space below.

  • Sheet metal - Metal that has been cut and shaped into flat, thin pieces. It can be made from aluminum, copper, steel, or other metals.
  • Fabrication - The process of building metal structures. There are several different stages involved in fabrication. The metal must first be cut, often with lasers or torches, then hammered into the appropriate shape. The fabricated metal is then assembled into its permanent arrangement, often with the aid of welding or similar tools.
  • Plate metal - Any metal with a thickness of at least 6mm. Plate metal is considered more durable than ordinary sheet metal. On the other extreme, very thin sheets are called foil or leaf, and are used for a variety of household and decorative purposes.
  • Gauge - The numerical grade indicating the thickness of metal. The higher the gauge number, the lower the thickness.
  • Forming - The process in which sheet metal is given specific shape. There are many standard methods of doing this. These include bending, laser cutting, and stretching. Another process is deep drawing, where the material is fabricated with the use of a stamp and die. Yet another method is decambering, which involves stretching the material to eliminate bends.
  • Fab shop - A shop that specializes in sheet metal fabrication. They are typically versed in many aspects of custom welding and metal assembly.

They often work with stainless steel, aluminum, and copper, for instance. And they can manipulate these metals in a variety of ways. They can cut metal sheets and plates with lasers, for instance. They can also cut these sheets and plates with other sharp-edged tools. They can stamp, weld, and fabricate the metal they work with too. So, if you're in need of some help with a metal structure or object of some sort, consider contacting one of these construction experts. If you tell him the specifics of your project, he'll build you a precision prototype to give you a better idea of how the project should turn out. Then, if you like what you see, you can ask him to design a more compete custom structure for you. He'll be able to bend sheets and scraps of metal into any form you choose. He could, for instance, bend metal into the shape of a roof shingle. He'll also be able to weld and fabricate this metal for you. If you ask, he may even use an incredibly advanced laser to cut it.
