Definitions Applied to Shelters

Shelters are often called refuges and havens, and that is exactly what they are for the people and animals who use them. Shelters provide local assistance by giving people and animals a place to stay, eat and sleep. Often in times of great tribulation we turn to shelters, such as an emergency shelter for an approaching hurricane, but some shelters are also permanent, like homeless or animal shelters. Below are the different terms used to describe different shelters.

  • Homeless shelter – This shelter gives local help to homeless people by providing with a place to sleep and eat. These are often permanent shelters.
  • Emergency shelter – Place for people who temporarily cannot live in their homes due to a disaster, domestic violence or abuse. Unlike homeless shelters, emergency shelters allow people to stay there during the day.
  • Battered Women shelter – A specific kind of emergency shelter for victims of domestic abuse that usually gives anyone who is a victim of violence a place to stay and get help. These types of shelters are more family oriented.
  • SAFE center – SAFE stands for Sexual Assault Forensic Examination center and it is place for victims of sexual assault to go get medical care, have evidence collected and get support after an attack.
  • Post-emergency shelter – After a disaster like a flood, earthquake or tornado, people either cannot return to their homes, or have no home to return to. These long term shelters are run by volunteer organizations like the Red Cross and are usually in places not meant to be shelters, like schools or churches.
  • Animal shelter – Pets can also become homeless too, and when they do they often end up in an animal shelter. Some shelters allow for pet adoptions for just a small adoption fee.

Every living organism needs food, water, shelter, and air to flourish. Sometimes one of the hardest things to find is a safe place to lay your head. In most cities, there are many types of local centers that provide humans and animals alike with a place to stay. One of the most well known are animal shelters. Many families have adopted their pets from these locations. Some of the cats and dogs are rescues, which means they may have been abused by previous owners. Most towns also have a homeless shelter for those who are down on their luck. The doors are open for anyone who does not have anywhere to go. Besides somewhere to sleep, homeless shelters also provide a warm meal and some even help in finding permanent dwellings. Battered women shelters are for ladies and their children who are not safe in their family home. Domestic violence is a growing problem in America and these places allow women to escape dangerous situations. Some locations, especially those who are at constant risk of a natural disaster, have emergency shelters. Citizens can escape here during tropical storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, or earthquakes. They are also used during other situations that leave a lot of people without a home, such as floods or the uncontrollable wild fires that occur in California. If you are interested in helping those in need, there are multiple things you can do. One of the easiest is adopting a pet from a local shelter and giving it a loving home. You can also become a volunteer at one of the shelters in your city. Volunteers help bring relief to those who are struggling in their current situation. Evaluate your schedule and see if you have time to make a difference in someone’s life.
