Skateboarding Terms to Know

Skateboarding is both a popular hobby and an extreme sport. Skateboarding equipment can be found in sport department stores or in skateboarding shops, which usually have an extensive selection. Skateboarding requires a lot of practice, as well as protective gear such as a helmet and knee and elbow pads. Below are some common popular terms used with skateboarding equipment.

  • Deck – The part of the skateboard that the rider stands on. There are both standard decks, which are used for sporting events, and long boards. The long board is bigger than an average skateboard and is often just ridden for fun, as it is difficult to perform tricks with a long board. Many decks usually have artistic designs underneath them.
  • Grip Tape – The material on top of the deck that helps a rider keep his footing by using traction. The grip tape is rough on one side allowing for maximum traction.
  • Wheels – Skateboarding wheels can come in a variety of sizes and colors. Older skateboards utilized larger wheels, but more modern skateboards use smaller ones that claim to have greater speeds. The wheels can come in a variety of colors.
  • Trucks – The metal part of a skateboard that attaches the wheels to the deck. These are actually the sturdiest part of the skateboard and don't need replacing as often as the wheels and deck does.
  • Bearings – The part of the skateboard that attaches the wheels to the trucks. Bearings come in different styles that allow for faster or slower wheels.
  • Curb Wax – A waxy material that can be placed on bars, railings and curbs so that the truck and deck of the skateboard can slide across it easier. Often used in skate parks or when doing skateboarding tricks and commonly sold in skate shops.

Skateboards and equipment are sold in shops and stores across the United States. Skateboarding is an activity that gained significant popularity in the 1970s, and involves durable skating devices that are crafted from strong wood and other materials. The boards are typically equipped with four wheels, grip tape for traction, ball bearings that help the wheels spin, and trucks, which the wheels attach to. Often, people who use skateboards practice on deck ramps and paved streets or sidewalks. If you have tried using a skateboard before, then you know that protective gear is essential. A helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and even special apparel are commonly worn when riding on a longboard or competition skateboard. Furthermore, there are special shoes used for skateboarding. Along with traction tape on the skateboard, these shoes help ensure that the rider will not fall off the board. A number of brand name companies manufacture professional skating equipment, backpacks, and tool kits for skateboarders. This means there is a great deal for skaters to choose from at this point. In fact, skateboards, curb wax, braces, and replacement wheels can all be located in local sporting goods shops and through online stores. If you live near a sporting goods store or professional skate shop, then you may want to contact them for more information regarding skateboard equipment, replacement trucks, new wheels, and longboard gear. Be sure to inquire about any specific deck ramps, shoe styles, padding, tools, or skating kits you are interested in, so you can get the help you need.
