Popular Sleep Disorder, Diagnostic and Treatment Terminology

Insomnia, sleep apnea, sleep deprivation and chronic snoring are just some of the sleep disorders which can wreak havoc on our waking lives. In order to have a better understanding of the challenges associated with sleep disorders, as well as the available diagnostic and treatment options, it is important to understand the terminology associated with the sleep study field. Below are some terms to be familiar with when researching sleep centers, clinics, or other diagnostic and treatment facilities.

  • Circadian - A term derived from the Latin meaning about a day. An internal circadian pacemaker in the hypothalamus of the brain organizes our physiology and behavior over a 24 hour period, including the sleep and wake cycle.
  • Hypnagogic Hallucinations - Dream-like sounds or images occurring just prior to sleep. These hallucinations are a symptom of narcolepsy that can be mistaken for psychosis.
  • Apnea - A cessation of breathing. When apnea occurs during sleep due to an obstruction of the airways despite efforts to breathe, akin to an extreme form of snoring, it is called obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Night Terror - A sleep disturbance that occurs during the non-dreaming stages of sleep, generally, deep slow-wave sleep. An individual experiencing a night terror is often overcome by panic but cannot easily be aroused because of the deep level of sleep in which this phenomena occurs. Unlike nightmares, night terrors generally lack visual imagery and are most often not remembered upon awakening.
  • Parasomnias - Troubling or undesirable behaviors that intrude during sleep, such as sleepwalking. They often are associated with abnormal or partial arousal and typically disrupt normal sleep.
  • Shift Work Disorder - A chronic condition directly related to a shift work schedule. Two primary symptoms are insomnia during times when a person is trying to sleep and excessive sleepiness when a person needs to be awake and alert.
