Sleep Disorder Terminology

Most health experts agree that a good night's sleep is one of the key components to long term health. Proper sleep habits can help reduce stress, anxiety and other medical and emotional problems. But for people who suffer from sleep disorders, a few hours of restful sleep is just a dream. These folks are often under a medical doctor's care and must be closely monitored throughout the night. In some extreme cases, they even have to go to a medical center to have their sleep disorders monitored by medical doctors to help diagnose the problem. Before seeing a doctor or sleep therapist, take a few moments to learn some of these common sleep disorder terms.

  • Sleep Apnea - Snoring can frequently mask a serious disorder like sleep apnea, which causes people to stop breathing while sleeping. Sleep apnea is more common amongst the obese, but is not limited to any one group. It's sometimes treated with an oxygen mask to keep the flow of air going.
  • Insomnia - While its causes may vary, insomnia always means the inability to fall asleep. There are a variety of prescription and holistic drugs used to treat this ailment.
  • Narcolepsy - A sleep disorder that is centered on frequent, and uncontrollable, bouts of daytime sleep. This falls far beyond the normal late afternoon slump and may include temporary paralysis.
  • Night Terrors - Usually common amongst children, these nightmares are characterized by screaming and a period of half sleep and half awake, that can be very terrifying for the person experiencing them.
