Sleep Disorder Terminology

Most health experts agree that a good night's sleep is one of the key components to long term health. Proper sleep habits can help reduce stress, anxiety and other medical and emotional problems. But for people who suffer from sleep disorders, a few hours of restful sleep is just a dream. These folks are often under a medical doctor's care and must be closely monitored throughout the night. In some extreme cases, they even have to go to a medical center to have their sleep disorders monitored by medical doctors to help diagnose the problem. Before seeing a doctor or sleep therapist, take a few moments to learn some of these common sleep disorder terms.

  • Sleep Apnea - Snoring can frequently mask a serious disorder like sleep apnea, which causes people to stop breathing while sleeping. Sleep apnea is more common amongst the obese, but is not limited to any one group. It's sometimes treated with an oxygen mask to keep the flow of air going.
  • Insomnia - While its causes may vary, insomnia always means the inability to fall asleep. There are a variety of prescription and holistic drugs used to treat this ailment.
  • Narcolepsy - A sleep disorder that is centered on frequent, and uncontrollable, bouts of daytime sleep. This falls far beyond the normal late afternoon slump and may include temporary paralysis.
  • Night Terrors - Usually common amongst children, these nightmares are characterized by screaming and a period of half sleep and half awake, that can be very terrifying for the person experiencing them.

Sleep disorder doctors are medical specialists who monitor and treat patients who suffer from various sleeping problems. This is a common disorder that has been around for centuries, and many centers, clinics, and therapists work all over the United States to assist people with conditions like narcolepsy, apnea, and insomnia. While narcolepsy causes individuals to fall asleep uncontrollably, insomnia makes it difficult for people to remain sleeping at night. As you may know, it can take a significant amount of time, as well as certain prescription medications, in order to successfully deal with sleeping disorders. One important aspect to understand about this topic is that there are various sleep disorders that people can suffer from. While one individual may suffer from anxiety or depression, which disrupts his or her normal sleeping habits, another person may be afflicted with apnea, which is a breathing disorder. Fortunately, there are many physicians, medical doctors, and therapists who can diagnose people with sleep disorders. This makes the condition or problem easier to treat. However, it may be important for a doctor or specialist to monitor a patient in a center or clinic before a diagnosis can be made. This allows the physician to see if the patient snores, suffers from apnea, is stressed out, has trouble getting to sleep, or has another problem. You can do quite a bit of online research pertaining to sleeping disorders. There is a great deal of data posted online regarding sleeping problems like insomnia, narcolepsy, anxiety attacks, and other disorders. This is also a simple way to learn more about doctors and physicians who treat these conditions.
