Snow Removal Equipment Terminology

If you are thinking of getting some equipment from a snow removal retailer to be better prepared for the upcoming winter season, there are some basic terms and definitions with which you may want to familiarize yourself.

  • A frame - The A frame is the structure that both supports the plow and attaches the equipment to the front of the truck.
  • Auger - An auger is a steel spiral, spinning tool. In the snow removal industry, it is used in snowblowers to direct the snow into the impeller.
  • Moldboard - The moldboard is the plowing term for the blade of the plough. Retailers will have several models of moldboards and ploughs, including straight, V-ploughs, and pushers.
  • Cutting Edge - The cutting edge is the bottom part of the plough that comes in contact with the pavement. On many shovels, this is reinforced with metal. On a plow, it is a beveled edge.
  • Hopper - The hopper is the vessel used to carry deicing material such as salt or sand. Hoppers come in a variety of sizes and capacities. Some can sit in the bed of a truck to disperse the ice-melt while the vehicle is in motion. Others are hand-pushed and operated, and can be useful for keeping a path clear and ice free after shoveling.
  • Solenoid - The solenoid is a component required to power your plough. The solenoid connects the hydraulic sections of the plow to the truck's engine and battery.
  • Guide - A guide is a large pole attached to the top edges of a plow to help the driver keep perspective of the machine's dimensions.

Freshly fallen snow can be pretty to look at, but it can present problems for getting around. That's why it needs to be removed from roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, and driveways. Snow removal equipment such as plows, snow blowers and pushers, tractors, and shovels are required by professionals, home owners, and business owners. If not removed properly, roadways and driveways can ice up and pose a safety threat to drivers and pedestrians. People can slip and fall on icy walkways, and cars can get stuck and skid on snow-covered roads. Contractors that specialize in snow removal, along with home and business owners who want to do the job themselves, can head to snow removal equipment retail stores for the necessary products. Such products can be found within department stores, home improvement stores, or specialty shops that strictly offer snow removal equipment. Many snow removal equipment retailers offer not only sales, but also rentals. Renting may appeal to those who only need the equipment for a short period of time and don't have the cash or need to buy outright. Snow removal equipment retailers offer large industrial or commercial machinery like snow throwers, plows, tractors, and ATVs. But they also usually offer smaller products designed to melt ice and provide traction, such as salt. Properly removing snow can provide access to people's front doors, or to businesses. It can also remove the hazard of slipping on ice, or getting trapped in large amounts of snow. Consumers can find out more about snow removal equipment by visiting their local home improvement store, department store, or snow removal equipment outlet. They may also be able to rent or buy online, looking out for cheap deals along the way.
