Soccer is not known as the “world game” without good reason. Soccer is played in over 200 countries and loved by boys and girls alike. The first professional soccer game was between the Scottish and the English in 1888 and has only grown in popularity. The game is fun for kids and youth and teaches agility and teamwork. Here are some terms to know if you or your kid is interested in joining a soccer team or club.
FIFA – FIFA is the International Federation of Association Football, the governing body for all soccer. Soccer is played by the English, Italians, Americans and teams from over 200 countries worldwide and FIFA is responsible for organizing tournaments and enforcing rules. FIFA for the national girl’s league was inducted in 1991.
Misconduct – Soccer has a set of rules known as the Laws of the Game that must be followed and when a rule is broken it is known as misconduct. It is important for youth to learn the rules of soccer from their coach to ensure that all teams are safe and can have fun while still remaining competitive.
Roster – A roster is a list of the players on a soccer team signifying who will play which position in a game.
World Cup – The World Cup is the ultimate soccer game which occurs every four years. This is an international game. The World Cup is organized and overseen by FIFA.
Shin Guards – Shin guards are a piece of equipment worn as part of the soccer uniform along with a jersey, shoes, socks and shorts. Shin guards are made from fiberglass, foam rubber or plastic and protect the shins from the soccer ball and are required by soccer clubs for players.
