A Few Key Terms Regarding Social Services

In the United States, there are social and human services offered in most cities. These are essentially government-regulated services that are provided to the community. Many people turn to human services for family counseling, housing, medical care, or child education needs. As you may know, this type of community organization is non-profit and provides assistance to virtually anyone in need. There are some key terms that can assist you with better understanding social services in your area.

  • Non-Profit Organization – This is an organization that functions to assist people in need or in times of crisis. They do no profit from their services, and both state and federal human services are examples of non-profit organizations. These services often provide food, medical assistance, and shelter to those in need.
  • Department of Health Education and Welfare – A government department that was created to better assist people in need. This organization helps people all over the United States with education, health care, and financial assistance.
  • Child Protective Services – This is a government-regulated division that investigates reports of child abuse, as well as child neglect. Services are provided to children and families in their homes, and some kids are often placed in foster care or adoptive homes.
  • Child Support Enforcement Division – An agency that functions in each state to locate non-custodial parents. This agency keeps track of child support payment court orders, and assists with collecting and distributing these funds accordingly.
  • Family Counseling Services – These are services provided to the public to assist families with problems like abuse, depression, and drug use. Although some family counseling services are non-profit and available to the public free of charge, others do charge a fee for profit.

    Non-profits that provide social and human services often offer mental health counseling for individuals and families, welfare assistance, adoption advice, and support for workers seeking compensation for on the job injuries. Many social and human services non-profits choose to focus on specific topics. An agency might, for instance, provide extensive family counseling that gives children and adults the opportunity to learn coping skills for negative emotions. Others provide rent assistance by helping unemployed people find work or loaning them money without interest. Most of the agencies that offer these types of services are non-profit organizations, but that does not mean that all of their social and human services are free. A social worker helping a family with several young children on welfare assistance will not usually charge for the assistance, but they might charge for mental health counseling. Since the organizations typically want everyone in the community to have access to their help, they usually charge on a sliding scale. This makes their social work agents more affordable for those without incomes or with low incomes. It is usually easy to find social and human service agencies that are located in your community. You can look in your phone book or search the internet for organizations that fit your needs. If you know that you need assistance with a specific issue, like mental health counseling or employee compensation, then you should include those words in your search to find organizations that have professionals who know a lot about the subjects that affect your life.
