Common Social Service and Welfare Organization Terms

If you are in need of assistance or looking to volunteer your time for a good cause, there are many social welfare organizations in existence that offer social services. A community center is a facility where people can come to participate in group activities, learn about issues effecting them, or receive social services. Community centers often have volunteer led programs for children, like after school sports or tutoring. Below are some common social service and welfare terms.

  • Homeless Shelter – A homeless shelter is a nonprofit organization that provides the homeless with a place to stay. A nonprofit shelter may provide long-term or short-term living facilities. Many have services designed to assist homeless people in finding work, developing job skills, and locating more permanent housing. Some shelters focus on specific at risk groups. For instance, there are family and women’s shelters.
  • Social Worker – Social workers take on a variety of different roles. Some give private therapy to clients, while others work for the government providing social services. However, all social workers have jobs that are directed towards the improvement of social welfare. Depending on the state, there are different educational and licensing requirements to become a social worker.
  • Foster Care – Foster care is a system designed to provide a short-term living situation for children whose parents are unwilling or unable to care for them. A child will typically be placed in the private home of foster parents until a permanent arrangement can be made for the child to be adopted, live with a relative, or move to a long-term home.

Social service and welfare organizations can be found all over America. As you may know, many of these government-run organizations are nonprofit, and are always available to the community. Many people volunteer at social service organizations and facilities in order to help people. Often these types of public services provide shelter, education, and even medical care. This way people who have a disability, have suffered from domestic violence, or require foster care, can be helped or assisted when in need. There are various types of social service departments and facilities. Some of these are animal shelters and humane societies for stray pets, foster care for children, and public welfare departments to assist family groups and disabled individuals. Typically when you enter a nonprofit organization like this, you apply or fill out an application of some sort. After all, some of them have certain requirements, such as welfare departments. However, an agency or community shelter that offers assistance to people that have suffered from domestic abuse or sexual assault, typically do not require anything. In fact, they will assist you by letting you stay there in order to prevent further physical abuse. Both women and men tend to volunteer at these community organizations, and some even prefer to work specifically with animals, and help them get adopted. If you need more information on social services, welfare organizations, or a specific community help center, you can access the World Wide Web for guidance. This does not take long, and there are contact phone numbers posted online.
