Social Workers
Social workers work within a variety of areas, usually for a local or state government agency. Their expertise is needed to help counsel adults and children going through tough times. For example, when children are turned over to the state's care because their parents have neglected or abused them, left willingly, or died, the state assigns a social worker to the case. These professionals must be licensed and certified, holding at least a bachelor's degree from the college of their choice, with concentrations in criminal justice or sociology. Their responsibilities include support, counseling, evaluations, and general case management. There are varying degrees of social work. A clinical social worker is trained in psychotherapy, with backgrounds in sociology, ethics, growth and development, mental health theory, and human behavior. In general, social workers act as advocates for those who have no voice, focusing on human rights for people of all ages, especially the youth of society. Trained in how to handle family relationships, social workers see several clients per day, often those with substance abuse or mental health problems. Counselors often work for child protective service offices, which are dedicated to keep children safe in abusive or otherwise unsafe environments. They also deal with people on the public welfare system on a regular basis, making sure they are utilizing their resources well. They work for hospice organizations, helping dying people and their loved ones cope with the impending loss. Social workers have lots of experience dealing with the family unit, as it pertains to work, school, and relationships. Sometimes they work in clinical or medical settings, schools, or within their own practice. Those in need of a social worker who can look after a child's or family's health and welfare can get referrals from government agencies, hospitals, and schools.
