Definitions of a Sound System
The following terms are commonly used when buying parts and equipment for a sound system:

Transducer: A device that converts energy by changing it into a different form. For example, a speaker take electrical energy in the form of an electrical charge and changes it into physical energy in the form of sound waves. All sound system devices are transducers.

Woofer: A part of a speaker that is able to play low frequencies. Woofers have a magnetic circle that surrounds a paper cone, and when the speaker is turned on, the paper cone vibrates against the magnetic ring, creating audio signals.

Subwoofer speakers are usually sold by themselves, and because movies and films heavily use low sound frequencies, they are popular for home theater installations.

Amplifier: A device that amplifies any sound signals that pass through it. Musical instruments like electric guitars are often plugged into amplifiers to enhance their sound.

Mixer: The central part of a sound system, a mixer takes various input cables from different sources and strings them together into a single output. Mixers are often used by DJ's and concert crews for public performances.
