Popular Terms for Sports Instruction
As you talk to various sports instructors in your area, you might find that they use certain terms that are unfamiliar to you. The list of key terms below should help you communicate with coaches and trainers. That way, you can decide which ones offer the kinds of athletic training that adults and youths need most for your preferred sport.
Fartlek training – a type of training that dramatically varies running speeds from sprinting to jogging. Fartlek training can improve endurance and speed, which is useful in a wide range of sports such as soccer, baseball, basketball, football, and track and field.
Cardio respiratory endurance – describes how well a person can perform aerobic exercises. Training often focuses on improving the cardio respiratory endurance of adult and youth athletes.
Anaerobic – you probably already know that aerobic training increases one’s metabolism and improves endurance through prolonged periods of exercise that get the heart pumping. Anaerobic training focuses on higher intensity exercises performed during shorter periods. Although they do not necessarily improve the type of endurance typically needed to play games like soccer, they do increase muscle mass and improve muscle definition. Coaches often find that this type of instruction is useful for athletes that play games like football, where short bursts of intense energy are required.
Anaerobic threshold – This is the point that aerobic exercises turn into anaerobic exercises. During this point, the cells are deprived of oxygen and lactic acid begins to accumulate in the athlete’s muscles.
