A Glossary of Fire Sprinkler Terms

Sprinkler systems work to ensure fire suppression. When installing one, you will need to know how your local government regulates fire protection via building codes. These codes will differ along residential and commercial zones and individual building specifications. When installing an indoor system for your home or place of business, familiarize yourself with these terms.

  • Alarm Check Valve – An alarm check valve keeps water from leaking back into the main water supply, which could contaminate it.
  • Dry Pipe Systems – These are installed wherever pipes are exposed to cold temperatures that would cause water to freeze, resulting in broken pipes. Full of compressed air, they contain and a valve that releases water from the main line. Because they consist of more parts, they are subject to greater repair needs than wet systems.
  • Fire Protection Contractors – These contractors are state-certified to design, install and fix sprinklers and other safety devices, such as smoke detectors.
  • Fire Pumps – These are necessary in very large buildings where the city can’t provide enough water in the event of a fire.
  • Pre-action Automatic System – In buildings where water release would cause damage (such as warehouses full of merchandise), this type of system has an extra fire-detecting feature to ensure that sprinklers must go off.
  • Wet Pipe Systems – These are cost-efficient, easy to install, low in repair needs, and consisting of only a few parts. Such advantages make them the most common type of system. Components include sprinkler heads attached to a main riser. You can’t install this type of system if pipes are exposed to freezing temperatures because they will break.

Fire sprinklers offer protection to both homes and commercial buildings. They provide the security you need in the event of a fire. In addition to offering alarms to alert you to a problem, these devices also provide automatic water protection to put out flames and smoke quickly and efficiently. The proven safety and prevention value of this equipment has made it a popular option for homes and many new residential buildings are making the installation of fire sprinklers, a standard practice. Consult with professionals about the many benefits associated with fire sprinkler systems, as well as some of the features you can expect when adding one of these products to your home. According to some statistics, the installation of a fire protection sprinkler in a commercial or residential building, along with a smoke alarm, can lower the cost of injury or death during a fire. This is because the automatic fire sprinkler is effective at containing the flames within a home or industrial building to a single room, allowing the people inside to escape unharmed before the fire spreads further. Fire sprinkler heads emit much less water than the hoses from fire departments, so you have less need for repair from water damage after these control systems go off. The home renovations price to install one of these control systems is going down as demand is going up, ensuring you can find a contractor to design a unit for your needs for an affordable price. Inspections, maintenance and repairs by a professional company are also relatively inexpensive, compared to the security you enjoy from knowing that fire sprinkler system in your ceiling is offering the ultimate protection for your home.
