Popular Terms Used in Garden and Lawn Sprinkler Installation

Many commercial spaces rely on pre-set lawn and garden sprinkler systems, and they are becoming popular in residential settings, too. A sprinkler system can cover your front and back yard, targeting not just your grass but planted areas and gardens as well. When you are looking for the right company to install a system in your home or commercial land, expect to hear mention of these terms.

  • Bubbler – A bubbler is a specific type of sprinkler head nozzle designed for deeper watering, meaning that each tree and plant receives adequate watering with minimized runoff water.
  • Controller – Most lawn and garden sprinkler systems have a controller, also called a timer, which sends an automatic signal to each control valve. This causes water to release. In homes, controllers typically "live" in the garage.
  • Coverage – Coverage refers to the space reached by each sprinkler head. An installation expert may refer to “head-to-head coverage,” which means that the entire area is saturated, with a degree of overlap.
  • Drip Irrigation – You may opt for a drip irrigation system in your garden, which targets individual plants.
  • Irrigation System – This term describes a system of pipes, valves and sprinkler heads that distributes water evenly throughout an area. In lawn care, an irrigation system will typically cover one’s lawn and flower gardens.
  • PSI – Short for “Pounds for Square Inch,” PSI is the unit of measure for the amount of force, or pressure, that water puts on the system. Figures measured in PSI include the Static Water Pressure (the pressure water exerts when it isn’t flowing) and the Dynamic, or Running Water Pressure.
  • PVC Pipe – PVC stands for “Poly Vinyl Chloride.” This white, unbending piping is used in most sprinkler systems, except in northern states, where you typically find polyethylene piping.

If you own your own home, you probably own a bit of property too. Maybe you have a modest back yard; maybe you have an expansive lawn, complete with a large garden; Maybe you only have a narrow strip of grass in front of your home. Whatever your property situation, you'd probably be better off with a sprinkler system. Fortunately for you, many lawn and garden specialists are happy to install sprinkler systems for their customers. If you contact one of these specialists, he will likely ask you for a bit more information about your lawn. Tell the specialist a bit about the land you own. Tell him whether it's a commercial or residential space. Tell him whether or not you've planted flowers or trees to brighten the area up a bit. Tell him a bit about the quality of your soil and whether it's difficult or easy to care for. Once your sprinkler specialist knows a bit about your lawn, he can help you install a sprinkler system. And he'll check the equipment after he installs it to make sure the water pressure is acceptable and the sprinkler shuts off automatically, if it's supposed to do so. He'll check the head and drip valve of your sprinkler too. He'll also check to see that the timer on your sprinkler system is working properly and is capable of being programmed. Your sprinkler specialist can also help you install an irrigation system in your home. If you live in a house with an especially large lawn or garden, an irrigation system can help you see to it that all of your plants receive enough water. If you'd like to contact one of these specialists, consider calling your local lawn and garden company today.
