Stables Terms to Know

A stable is a place for domestic animals to live, usually horses. This can vary from a simple barn to a large equestrian centers. Finding the right stable depends on how much time and effort the owner wants to invest in their horse or pony. Below are some common terms used for stables.

  • Boarding Stalls - The place where a horse or pony is kept. Stalls are secure areas where the animals are fed, watered and kept dry. The size and bedding of the stall varies depending on the amount of board the owner pays for the animal and the number of stalls available in the barn.
  • Groom – A person whose job it is to take care of the horses. This requires feeding them daily, changing their bedding and putting them in the pasture. Sometimes a groom is including with the boarding fee of the stable, other times the owner is expected to act as the groom for the horse.
  • Pasture – A grassy area where a horse or pony can graze freely. A good equestrian center should have large green pastures.
  • Training Ring – An area where the owner can ride the horse and practice for horse shows. These can include jumping equipment. Training rings can be indoor or outdoor.
  • Riding Trail – A place where the owner can ride the horse for pleasure and exercise. Riding trails should be well maintained.
  • Tack Room – An area of the stable used for storing equipment, such as English or Western saddles, bridles and brushes.
  • Breeding Facility - An area where horses can be breed, usually found on large horse farms. Here the prospective breeding pair are kept apart from the other horses.

Stables are needed to shelter horses. Essentially homes for horses, stables are barn-like structures that equestrian care givers utilize to tend to their horses. Within the stalls, they can groom their pets, feed them, and provide other care necessary for horses to thrive. Stables provide shelter and warmth for cold nights, as well as cool environments in the hot summer months.

People can rent a stable on a monthly basis, they can purchase one on their own, or they can build one on their property for private training use. Stables usually have both indoor and outdoor areas where horses can rest or run around. People can train their horses here, or take riding lessons. Services offered by public stables include boarding, clinics, and competitions.

Such a facility, usually located on a ranch or pasture, may also offer trails, arenas, and round pens. Horses and riders can take part in shows, contests, and events, or just learn the basic lessons of how to ride and jump. Many stables also sell products, such as cleaning and grooming products, tack, English and western equestrian supplies, feed, and hay. Some stables offer breeding services as well.

Some stables may specialize in racing, some specialize in breeding and turn out, and some specialize in room and board. Still others focus strictly on horseback riding lessons for children. They may house other horse-related animals such as a pony or two. Whether riders are looking to train, ride, board, or compete, they can learn more equestrian information on the web or from their local animal shelters. Private stables and barns can be found online or in the phone book, and referrals from others in the business may be helpful as well.
