Terms to Know About Statuary

Statuary is the use of sculptures and statues as ornaments. People enjoy using statuary, fountains and more as lawn ornaments. Décor such as bird baths attracts wildlife while other pieces have religious significance or simply just are aesthetic. Here are some terms to know about statuary.

  • Statuary – Statuary itself is not a well-known word but it describes many things to do with the art of sculpting and decorating a yard or other space with sculptures. Many outdoor stores have a statuary section complete with garden ornaments and more. Statuary are made from metal, concrete and more.
  • Marble – Marble is a natural rock of recrystallized carbonate minerals used for sculpting because it’s strong, durable and survives outdoors.
  • Gargoyles – Gargoyles are sculptures designed with spouts that acted as gutters removing rain water from rooftops but are more popularly recognized as monster-like sculptures that adorn 18th and 19th century churches.
  • Urns – Urns are often found at statuary stores and are vessels that hold drinks, ashes of a deceased loved one or are used only as an ornament. Urns are often made of concrete or metal.
  • Greco-Deco – Greco deco is an art style that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s that features Greek and Roman traditional styles within sculptures and other art pieces.
  • Recirculating System – A recirculating system is the process by which fountains pump water through the bottom of the fountain up and out the spout of the fountain. Fountains often require electricity to recirculate water while others depend on gravity and physics.
  • Relief – Relief is a specific style of sculpting in which the sculpture appears to rise off a background piece of material or wall. Relief sculptures are the world feature bronze battle scenes, religious scenes and more.
