Stone Contractors Terms to Know

Stone contractors, or masons, provide professional installation of stone. These professionals are qualified to manage a variety of construction jobs, from tile counters to entire homes. Following are some common terms used by stone contractors.

  • Agglomerate – An agglomerate, or cast stone, is a man made material. It is usually made of stone bits set in mortar. It is designed to look like natural stone.
  • Angle Iron – Angle irons are used for additional building support. They are steel or iron bars that are bent at right angles.
  • Ashlar – Ashlar, or cut stone, is rock that is ready for residential or commercial use. Ashlar is rectangular.
  • Bed Joint – A bed joint is the base for a building. Stone contractors place this layer of mortar before beginning construction.
  • Bullnose – Masons use the term bullnose in reference to the rounded edge or corner of a completed building, counter top, or other finished surface.
  • Butt Joint – Butt joins are crafted on the outside of a completed structure. They occur when one stone overlaps another at the corner of the building.
  • Cement – Cement is a combination of clay and small limestone fragments.
  • Concrete – Concrete is a combination of cement, water, and other natural materials. Once concrete sets, it becomes as hard as many types of natural stone. It is less expensive than stone tiles or rock slabs, though it can be used in many of the same ways.
  • Coping – Copings are coverings that help deflect water from the top of a finished wall.
  • Mortar – Mortar is a combination of cement, water, and other natural materials. Masons use mortar as an adhesive for bricks and other building supplies.
  • Quoins – Quoins are stone blocks that make up the outside corners of walls.

Stone contractors are professionals that typically work in the construction business. These experts may sell or work with materials like rock, cement, marble, or tile. Then again, they may deal more with the masonry aspect of things. This means that they work to install, set up and build an array of countertops, driveways, and decorative floors. Regardless, this is a very important field, and it commonly involves a high number of workers, who are employed all over the country. Since stone contractors and masonry workers assist commercial and residential locations all over the United States, there is likely to be at least one of these concrete and tile experts in your area. You can hire a professional in this field to assist you with installing marble countertops, natural granite bathroom sinks, limestone floors, or decorative quartz fireplaces. Stone contractors also sometimes work with stucco wall materials, driveway paving, and brick floor setting or laying. While there are industrial contractors in this field, there are also experts who deal with tile and rock specifically for residential homes. A great deal of planning and material goes into building and renovating stone fixtures like fireplaces, bathroom floors, and kitchen sinks. Use the Internet to get a better grasp on what stone and concrete contractors have to offer these days, and where they are located around the country. This is a simple and convenient way to learn more about residential driveway paving, marble floor installation, granite countertop maintenance, and more. Take a moment to surf the web for information that interests you.
