Important Self-Service Storage Definitions

Self-storage is an important service for those moving to new homes. Looking for storage units and space to rent can be tricky. Whether it's for furniture, a car, or other personal items, a facility must be carefully vetted before use. Customers, or renters, can take precaution against using poor facilities by arming themselves with knowledge. The following is a list of terms that will assist shoppers when they are considering storage units.

  • Late Fees - Fines that some self-storage facilities will charge when payment on a unit is late. They are generally limited by law.
  • Moving Container - Portable units that can be delivered to a customer's house; useful when a customer needs space while moving or cleaning out a garage.
  • Lien - A security interest which the manager of the facility holds over a renter's items. If a renter fails to pay over a certain period of time, the manager gains ownership of the items stored on site.
  • Climate Control - This is featured at some sites. Climate control is great for items that can be damaged by weather or temperature extremes.
  • Outdoor Storage - A facility geared toward larger possessions like boats, RV's, and items generally stored outside of the home.
  • Auctions - If a renter fails to make monthly payments, the facility manager may auction off the items inside a unit.
  • Non-climate Controlled Storage - A facility that allows the temperature and humidity inside of its units to fluctuate. Generally, items will still be safe from weather, but more delicate possessions should be kept elsewhere.

The storage industry really began in the 1850s, although banks would take goods for storage before then. At that time the first warehouses specifically designed to store personal possessions were built. Modern self storage buildings, however, did not really come into existence until the 1960s. Prior to that date, the warehouseman was responsible for the possessions stored. With self storage, the client is responsible for the key and any items within such as furniture or valuables. Some self storage buildings are essentially garages, used to store vehicles. Cars, RVs and boats may all be put into storage, commonly for the winter. At the other end of the scale, a mini storage facility may provide areas little larger than a safe. Storage containers are rented and can be delivered to your doorstep. Often, storage is used by those in the process of moving or by the temporarily homeless. A storage unit may contain all of a client's worldly goods, or just items they don't have space for. If rent is not paid, it is generally possible for the storage company to sell the goods to reclaim their money. Some storage containers are portable. The company will drive the unit to the home, and then back to the facility once it has been loaded. Alternatively, these storage containers may be transported door to door as part of a moving service. The cost of a storage unit is generally determined by the amount of space provided. Storage facilities are generally located in warehousing areas and generally focus on a specific size. Usually, they offer either garage sized or mini units, the latter sometimes stacked to form multiple stories. They provide a basic service of secure storage for goods that are currently not needed.
