Popular Surfboards Terms

Surfing is a sport where individuals ride a board to catch the crest of an ocean wave. The board used depends on someone's skill set. Long boards are used for beginners, while experts often use short boards for better performance. Surfers paddle out to the ocean and wait for a wave to come. Most surfers wear wetsuits to protect their body from the elements. Wetsuits are made of synthetic rubber and keep the body warm in cooler waters.

  • Crease - A crease is any damage done to a surfboard by general impact. This is caused when the board flexes more than the resin or glass allows. A crease will be noticed by a fracture line running across the board.
  • Airbrush - Surfboard designers use airbrush to spray on color to a surfboard.
  • Fin - Fins are the rubber devices that are located underneath the surfboard and give surfers control over the board.
  • Longboard - Longboards are longer and broader than typical surfboards and will be over nine feet in length and 22 inches in width. These boards are commonly used in lessons when teaching someone how to surf.
  • Shortboard - A shortboard is a type of performance surfboard that ranges from 5 to 7 feet in length. This board allow surfers to reach high speeds and make precision turns.
  • Tail - The tail is the rear 12 inches of the surfboard.
  • Noseguard - The noseguard is the tip of the surfboard and attached to protect the point from injuring a person or damaging another board.
  • Skimboarding - Skimboarding begins on the beach, and individuals ride across the water in a style similar to surfing.
  • Surf Fishing - Surf fishing is when someone is standing on the beach or in the surf and casting a lure. Surfers should be on the look out for these anglers when riding into shore.

Historically, surfing has been an integral part of many coastal cultures. Not only were surfboards used for recreational purposes, but they were also used to fish from. Many modern boards are specially designed for fishing. Surf instructors offer lessons to interested people, which has developed a popularity for the sport of surfing. When surfing, a person stands on a shaped piece of wood or fiberglass. The plank has a narrow nose used to slice through waves. Newer long and short surfboards are made from foam and fiberglass or epoxy. This ensures to keep the boards them lightweight and buoyant. There are various sizes of boards for riders of all sizes and weights. Short planks are more difficult to ride for amateur surfers. That is why long boards are often the choice for beginning surfers, because they are easier to maneuver in the water. A fin keeps the board from slipping sideways while on top of the water. The planks can have one or more fins and are always located on the underside. Surfboards are coated in waterproof epoxy or fiberglass to keep salt water from deteriorating the foam core. Footpads and wax on the board help to provide the rider with better traction. The surfboard also has a leash that attached to the rider's ankle. This rope help keeps the board from floating away if the rider falls off. Purchase new or used surfboards from local retail stores. You'll also find other essential supplies like wetsuits, storage bags, wax, surfing apparel and accessories. Cheap vintage and classic models are often found in used shops. Rent from a beach side surfboard company when you're at the ocean. If you want a custom creation, a company specializing in surfboards can create your dream surfboard.
