Swimming Pool Construction Terms Defined

Looking for a contractor to custom build you that magnificent watering hole of your dreams with waterfalls and fountains? Or perhaps you want an above ground pool to get the kids through the summer? Let’s look at some swimming pool construction terminology.

  • Above ground pool – An above ground pool sits above the ground rather than being built into the landscape, and is smaller in size. This type of pool is much cheaper than an inground pool and doesn’t require a concrete contractor.
  • Backfill – Backfill is the repositioning of soil in the landscape after pool construction.
  • Filter – This is a device that takes dirt particles, leaves, and even frogs out of the water by pumping it.
  • Fiberglass pool – A fiberglass pool, while more expensive than a concrete pool, lasts longer and requires less maintenance. It is installed in one big piece.
  • Indoor pool – Typical to hotels and gyms, you can swim in an indoor pool all year round.
  • Inground – An inground pool is literally installed into the ground.
  • Plaster – An interior finish applied over the concrete (or fiberglass) shell.
  • Resurfacing – Resurfacing is the process of putting down new plaster or an alternative material, and usually requires a concrete contractor.
  • Salt water pool – A salt water pool has a chlorine generator, meaning that you don’t have to buy chlorine. Some people claim that their skin doesn’t dry out as much in these.
  • Tile stone – This decorative option features tiles of ceramic, porcelain or other material on the pool walls, deck and floor.

Swimming pool construction is common for both residential homes and commercial swimming facilities. Typically a pool contractor oversees the construction of new pools and the repairs on older pools. There are plenty of options and plans when it comes to designing and building a swimming pool for competitions and recreational use. In the United States alone, new pools are constructed daily. While some of these are made from concrete, others are built out of fiberglass. The summer months are primarily when people utilize outdoor swimming pools. However, many indoor pools and spas are used during other parts of the year. Some people use indoor facilities for swimming laps. When building a new pool, contractors commonly need materials like tiles, ladders, filters, and maintenance equipment. At times, the water must be drained from all pools in order for the liner and filter to be cleaned. Then new water is added and treated with chlorine. When swimming pools are designed for residential home backyards, a landscaping plan is often needed as well. Nowadays many homeowners have in ground pools of various sizes and depths installed. One way to learn a lot more about swimming pool construction, available contractors, and various plans or designs for swimming pools is by using the web. There is a great deal of information online pertaining to this industry. Try to focus on specifics and plans you are interested in. This way you will pinpoint the information you need more quickly.
