Tack Shop Terms to Know

Equestrian shops supply all the necessary equipment that an equestrian needs for their horse. Tack, or equipment worn by a horse, is available from shops for both competitive and beginner riding. The following are some terms for various tack supplies that you might come across:

  • Bridle - The headstall and bit which work together to control and guide the horse.
  • Headstall - A part of the bridle consisting of straps placed around the horse's head, which fasten the bit in the horse's mouth.
  • Bit - A metal piece that is held in the horse's mouth and used to control and communicate with the horse.
  • Halter - Also known as a headcollar, a type of tack used for leading and tying the horse. It is usually not used for riding as it does not provide sufficient control.
  • Cinch - A wide strap that fastens the saddle to a horse's back. This is called a girth in other countries. It encircles the horse behind the forelegs. A flank or back cinch is a second strap that some riders may use. It encircles the belly of the horse.
  • Stirrups - Foot supports that help the rider climb on top of the horse and it also keeps the rider stable.
  • Tapadero - A hooded stirrup with leather that closes on the front, preventing a rider's boot from slipping through. These are often used as a safety equipment for children.
  • Bell Boots - A boot that a horse or pony wears, which encircles the ankle and protects the legs and heels.
  • Saddle Pads - Also known as a saddle blanket, a type of equipment that cushions the saddle and protects the horse's back.
  • Breast Collars - A type of tack that keeps the saddle or harness in place during competition and activities.

Tack shops sell everything related to the care of horses. This can go for products related to the sport of horseback riding and competing, horse grooming and care, feeding, and safety. Equestrians typically buy their products from tack shops in and around their local area. Some are also located online. From reins and harnesses to bridles and riding apparel, tack shops have what customers need. Some people own stables and training facilities, while others rent out boarding space for their horse. Some even own their own stable in their back yard. Whatever the case, accessories such as leads, bits, blankets, halters, and saddlery are all required when caring for a horse. Customers can find tack shops through their equestrian organization, local horse club, or through fellow equestrian referrals. Online listing directories can also point people in the right directions. Tack shops have been around for centuries, in one form or another. Horses have been used by humans for sport and convenience for many years. Whether to haul cargo packs, carriages, knights in shining armor, or cowboys, horses have proven to be useful in millions of years they have been on Earth, if you count their earliest ancestors. They are generally gentle creatures and can be trained to perform. They are often seen in riding arenas, ridden by equestrians. Horses also make great pets due to their gentle nature. Tack shops sell horse-related products to horse owners, stables, horse racing arenas, jockeys, and the general public. Supply items like stirrups, blinders, head gear, pack bags, and crops may all be needed to properly outfit a horse. Whips, Western and English saddlery, horseshoes, tools, and leads are also necessary supply items customers can buy on the retail or wholesale level.
