Equestrian shops supply all the necessary equipment that an equestrian needs for their horse. Tack, or equipment worn by a horse, is available from shops for both competitive and beginner riding. The following are some terms for various tack supplies that you might come across:

  • Bridle - The headstall and bit which work together to control and guide the horse.
  • Headstall - A part of the bridle consisting of straps placed around the horse's head, which fasten the bit in the horse's mouth.
  • Bit - A metal piece that is held in the horse's mouth and used to control and communicate with the horse.
  • Halter - Also known as a headcollar, a type of tack used for leading and tying the horse. It is usually not used for riding as it does not provide sufficient control.
  • Cinch - A wide strap that fastens the saddle to a horse's back. This is called a girth in other countries. It encircles the horse behind the forelegs. A flank or back cinch is a second strap that some riders may use. It encircles the belly of the horse.
  • Stirrups - Foot supports that help the rider climb on top of the horse and it also keeps the rider stable.
  • Tapadero - A hooded stirrup with leather that closes on the front, preventing a rider's boot from slipping through. These are often used as a safety equipment for children.
  • Bell Boots - A boot that a horse or pony wears, which encircles the ankle and protects the legs and heels.
  • Saddle Pads - Also known as a saddle blanket, a type of equipment that cushions the saddle and protects the horse's back.
  • Breast Collars - A type of tack that keeps the saddle or harness in place during competition and activities.
