Popular Mens Tailors Terms

Men's clothing often gets less attention in the fashion industry than women's. But, as any tailor will tell you, there is just as much sartorial variation in the market for men's clothes. One dress shirt is not equal to another. The difference between an Italian suit and a tuxedo is immense. Dress clothes for men can vary from an inexpensive warehouse suit to a five figure tuxedo. So whether you want to buy cheap or expensive, you have a lot to consider before you hit the racks. Avoid making a fashion blunder at your next wedding by taking a quick glance at these five popular terms used by men's tailors.

  • Inseam - A measurement taken on the inside of a man's legs. A tailor designing a custom pair of pants or attempting to alter an existing outfit will need to measure the distance from groin to ankle.
  • Black Tie - A special event requiring a tuxedo. Some events are so fancy that a regular old suit won't cut it. Most men don't own their own tuxedos. In that case, rental is probably the cheapest option. A tailor will measure a man's neck to determine his tuxedo shirt size.
  • Hem - When a tailor hems a piece of cloth he cuts an edge into the section to prevent the fabric from fraying. Hems are most common around the ankle of men's pants.
  • French Cuffs - A special shirt without buttons around the wrist. A french cuff shirt will have two holes in the shirt cuffs through which a man must insert cuff links.
  • Designer - A professional who may or may not also be a professional tailor. Many designers are simply artists. Designers prescribe the aesthetic parameters of a piece of clothing.

Men's suits do not always fit directly off the rack. For example, a jacket may be too large or a pair of slacks may need to be hemmed. Some men even prefer their suits and other clothing to be custom designed from scratch. For such tasks, a tailor is needed. Tailors have many sewing skills, from altering clothing to fit the person, to measuring and designing a new suit for a client. Many professional tailors own their own business, and are often clothing designers themselves. Clean, smart menswear can be extremely hard to come by, and a skilled professional is always in demand for sewing and hemming purposes. There are various styles of tailoring. In the United Kingdom, the most popular, classic style is called bespoke tailoring. In this type of fitting, the buyer has control over all aspects, from the fabric chosen for the jacket, to the overall fit and appearance of the pants. The actual patterns for bespoke tailoring are cut from scratch for each client, making any look a customized one. More information about this customized clothing style can be found online. All tailors need to be able to sew seams, create shirts, adjust pants and measure their clients correctly, so they get the right fit. If these talented clothiers do not make the suits from scratch, they can still help with the alterations, making a jacket shorter or longer in the sleeves, taking in the waist of a pair or pants, and more. In a closely related field, many of these professionals also work for or with a dry cleaning company. Here, they can have the suits pressed, ironed and steam cleaned before delivering them to their clients.
