Important Theatrical Equipment Terms

Working behind the scenes for a theater can require some extra knowledge regarding equipment. Become familiar with lighting, risers, rigs, and other equipment associated with the production of properly supplying the stage. Here are some important theatrical equipment terms.

  • Backdrop - When alternating scenery during a production one may need to rig a backdrop. It drops from the rafter much like a curtain, but will usually be in the rear of the stage. It is used to create different visual effects and place the setting for a scene.
  • Gobo - This is used to shape certain types of lighting. A gobo is a pattern placed over a light in order to create a desired shape and supply the effect.
  • Trellis - this can be used to attach lighting and additional props if desired. A trellis is often a shaped frame that can act as a base or rack to create vertical shapes. It is useful as a prop or to assist in a lighting system.
  • Riser - If production calls for varying height of the stage then a riser may be used. It can lift a part of the stage to create the desired effect. When used with other special effects like lasers, flood lights, scrims and fog it can create a spectacular illusion.
  • Scrim - These are used to achieve certain lighting effects. Scrim can reflect or transmit lighting. When used it can give special visual effects by creating shadows or lighting specific areas of the stage.

There are many types of equipment in the theater that can be purchased or used as a rental. The equipment can be just as important as the costume, makeup, or any other part of the theatrical production.

From barns and basements, to playhouses and auditoriums, theaters are a great way for individuals to experience live entertainment. Theater equipment and lighting rigs are a critical component of the theater experience. Trained technicians ensure that performances, sets and backdrops look visually appealing for audiences. In addition, technicians supply much-needed safety and stability to sets and stage designs. Lighting systems are crucial to shaping and highlighting a stage character’s costume, makeup and other key components of a theater performance’s aesthetic and design. Many important pieces of equipment go into the production of stage and theater lighting. For instance, items such as scrims and gobos help shape and augment light on stage. In addition, materials such as fog, lasers and flood lights can help provide a greater sense of depth and space to a performance. Along with stage lighting, theater equipment is crucial to ensuring the success of a performance. Theater equipment can encompass a wide variety of items. For example, soundboards, microphones and other audio and video gear are a necessary component of theater productions. They allow audiences to hear dialogue and witness special effects. Since many theaters exist in older buildings such as barns, theater equipment is critical to supporting stages and sets. Items such as risers, ropes, and doors are parts of the stage. Lifts and curtain racks are often used to help reinforce and stabilize props. In addition, smaller items such as wood, nails and screws play a fundamental role in the construction and maintenance of theater stages and risers. Most of these items come from a theater company’s supply room. They can also be obtained from theater rental equipment companies. Overall, theater and stage equipment are critical to the production processes of the theater and film industry.
