Key Terms in the World of Thrift Shops

Because of increased prices, consumers are looking to second hand shopping to make small and large purchases. Thrift stores offer bargain and sale prices for gently used apparel, household decor and other items. Window shop through these key terms that might be useful next time you visit a thrift shop.

  • Consignment - An arrangement where a consignor delivers items or goods to a consignee to be resold or reused where the consignee pays a portion of the proceeds to the consignor. Clothes and furniture are among the many items that may be put on consignment.
  • Resale - The act of selling again or selling something that was already bought. Resale shops fall in the category of thrift shops because of the potential bargains that may exist and because used items such as furniture and clothes may be found in a resale shop. Resale shops often have sales for many items at cheap prices.
  • Vintage - Second hand garments from a previous era. Garments over 25 years old are typically considered vintage.
  • Charity Shop - A thrift store owned by a charity but is run as an independent business under contract. Charity shops are considered a retail establishment but only collect money from buyers for items purchased toward that independent charity.
  • Thrifting Community - Online community that share cheap deals for thrift stores in various regions. These communities also give general advice on thrift shopping for new and seasoned shoppers alike. There is often a forum, weekly newsletter and daily deals associated within the thrifting community.

Thrift shops are stores that sell second hand items such as furniture, clothing, and jewelry. Thrift stores often give people the option to purchase these used items at the cheapest possible prices. The shop might be operated as a charity or a consignment store. Although some consignment stores focus on selling vintage and antique clothes, others concentrate on selling second hand clothes at cheap prices. They often carry a wide range of styles for men, women, and children. They might even have baby clothes for sale. Many thrift stores can afford to sell used furniture and textiles at bargain prices because they do not pay money for these items. Instead, they accept donations. They can then resale the items at extremely cheap prices. Although many people think of thrift stores as inexpensive places where they can buy costumes, many of the stores have modern fashions from name brand designers. Instead of spending a lot of money on these items at a retail store, people can choose to buy them much more cheaply from the thrift shop. Some of the stores will even have gold and silver jewelry at inexpensive prices. Since the types of items and fashions that stores keep in stock can vary significantly, you should consider using a popular Internet search engine to find the websites of several thrift shops in your area. This could help you decide which ones have the types of clothing, footwear, furniture, and jewelry that interest you. Instead of driving from store to store, you can decide which ones fit your style best.
