Decorative tile can certainly improve the appearance and value of homes and other buildings. However, before laying ceramic slate or natural tile, you should first understand a little about this industry. Take a look at the useful definitions found below and you will be better equipped to deal with ceramic tile contractors.

  • Mexican Tile – An imported ceramic or terracotta tile that is typically vibrant in color, and offers a Mexican or southwestern style or appearance.
  • Slate – This is a fine-grained metamorphic rock that is green, gray, or bluish in hue. It can be split into thin sheets easily.

    Ceramic tiles have been found in ruins that date back over 4000 years. They were heavily used by the Romans, and many of their murals survive today. Roofing is one of the older uses of ceramic tiles, although slate is also common in some parts of the world. Ceramic tiles are also used as flooring material. Although plastic composite is used as a cheaper alternative, ceramic tile floors and walls are still common. They are most commonly used in kitchens and bathrooms, especially to line showers. In modern times, Mexican and Italian tiles are considered to be of particularly high quality. Some dealers specialize in them. Dealers sell tiles to both home owners and to contractors. Contractors often lay tiles as part of remodeling or home improvement. Tiles are also used to line ponds and swimming pools. They may be in their natural state or glazed or painted. Tile installation requires a certain amount of skill. Although some may attempt it as part of a home improvement project, it is most often done by a contractor. Remodeling a kitchen or bathroom is likely to need new tile. Interior designers may also request decorative tiles. Stone, especially marble, is also used. The highest end tiles are porcelain.
