Terms Related to Cutting Tools

Cutting tools, such as lathes and band saws, are important tools for any woodworker. As their name suggests, they are used to cut a variety of materials. Sawmills use them to cut giant trees into workable lumber, while fine saws are used to slice glass and industrial drills are used to tear and cut concrete. Below are listed some common terms that are used with cutting tools.

  • Circular Saws – A type of saw whose teeth are arrayed in a circle, from whence it gets its name. Typically used by sawmills to cut wood, but circular saws can also cut plastic and metal. This type can be very large, or they can even come in hand-held electric models
  • Bandsaw – A type of saw with teeth only on one side of the blade. The blade moves rapidly up and down along a band, giving the saw its name. Band saws are used for metalworking and woodworking. They can be powered by gas or by electricity.
  • Lathe – A tool that clamps down an item in preparation for cutting by a saw. Lathes are commonly used in woodworking and metalworking.
  • Tungsten Carbide – A type of metal used on a saw blade, usually for large timber. Tungsten carbide blades are 3 times stronger than steel, which is why they are often used in large sawmills. This are either gas or electric powered.
  • Metal Bonded Blade – A blade that uses metal to bind another material, usually diamonds, into the blade. Diamond saws are incredibly strong and can cut into almost anything. However, as one might imagine, they are quite expensive to buy and are used mainly for industrial purposes. They are usually powered by gas.

Surplus cutting tools are sold to companies, professionals, and consumers across the United States. Anything from lathe cutting devices that fit into machines, to hand saws for cutting wood, to pneumatic or gas operated tools for cutting drywall are needed all the time nowadays. While some of these tools can cut through glass, others can slice through metal and concrete. Both new and used cutting and milling devices are sold by dealers, and they can commonly be acquired at discount rates when purchased in bulk. There are numerous uses for cutting tools and equipment. While some are used in major lumber mills, such as lathe machines, others are needed for metalworking. Although you may not realize it, some blades are equipped with carbide edges, which are diamond particles. This makes the blade cut more effectively, as diamond is a very hard substance. Buyers, whether they are in construction, the lumber industry, carpentry, or the medical field, have to be able to depend on their cutting tools. Often, surplus businesses are importers of various cutting tools like metalworking saws, knives with razor sharp carbide edges, stainless steel scissors, and medical grade surgical steel scalpels. Not all pneumatic band saws, diamond glass cutting tools, hand-held landscaping clippers, and drywall cutting equipment is manufactured in the United States. You can learn more about cutting tools and machinery by visiting a local hardware store or home improvement center. These kinds of retail facilities deal with suppliers all the time, and could offer you some information. Just be sure to ask questions that pertain to the woodworking or metalworking products and equipment that interest you.
