Townhouse Terms to Know
A townhome is defined as a dwelling that is attached to another dwelling. It is different from an apartment, which usually includes other dwellings on all sides, even above and below. A townhome only has immediate neighbors on the left and the right sides and are sometimes called row houses because they were often build in straight rows. They are often found in urban and suburban areas where they can often be bought or rented. Below are some common terms used when searching for a townhome.
Condo - Short for condominium. A condo is an attached dwelling that is actually owned, not rented. Therefore, condos can include townhouses as well as apartments. In many cities, townhouses may be marketed as condos by residential properties. Often, condos include luxury additions and upgrades.
Terrace Style – This style of townhouses are not actually located on street level, but on a raised platform above street level. To reach the front door one has to walk up a flight of stairs to the terrace level. Sometimes, however, the garage, if the townhouse has one, will be included on the ground level.
Loft – An interior room that is open to the lower level on at least one side. Since townhouses often have two floors, some of them may include lofts that can serve as an office or bedroom.
Furnished – Executive rentals are often marketed as being furnished, which means not only do they include basic kitchen appliances, but they also include furniture. A furnished townhouse will rent for more money than an unfurnished one.
Community Amenities – In large subdivisions and complexes this refers to activities that are limited to members of the community. Amenities for townhome communities often include a community pool and a gym.
Townhouses, also known as townhomes, are a pleasant combination between condos, lofts, and actual houses. Townhomes usually share a single wall with their neighboring home, and are uniform in style and design with the rest of neighboring townhouses. Also, the are usually part of a larger residential complex or community, after the style of apartments, so are set up in neat rows of homes. They can also be described as terrace houses.
Similarly to condos, terraced homes are often owned on an individual basis, though that owner may choose to rent it out. They can contain several rooms, though the standard seems to be two to three bedrooms, combined with two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a family room. Some of the advantages of becoming a townhome owner are the ability to own a home, but without the high prices; they are a great starter place for a new family. On the down side, though, town homes are not really customized. The property is the same as all those around it. The shared wall may be a problem if you have noisy neighbors, just the same as living in a loft or apartment. Additionally, they are commonly managed by a home owner's association, so new owners will have to deal with the politics of that.
Terraced houses traditionally belonged to the realm of the wealthy Europeans. They were second family houses or suites set up in rows in the city, with the larger homes located in the European countryside. Now, however, they have become an affordable option for many, where many amenities are offered.
