Tractor Terms to Know

If you are in the market for a tractor for your farm or lawn, there are some important things to know first. The variety of tractors offered by your local supplier or dealer can be overwhelming and confusing, so first familiarize yourself with some basic terms and definitions.

  • Three-Point Hitch - If you want your tractor to haul attachments such as lawn mowers and garden trowels, you'll need a compact version that has a three-point hitch to drag such machinery. Most base models have a three-point hitch option.
  • Chassis - The chassis is the basic frame of the garden or farm tractor. This does not include wheels, but the heavy duty metal framework that protects the engine, suspension, and other internal elements.
  • Loader - You may also want to use your tractor for digging or hauling dirt and mulch. In this case, ask the dealer about models with front end attachments and proper tires for safety and balance.
  • Zero Turning Radius - If you need a compact new or used model, your dealer may mention machines that have the ability to turn sharply and safely. This allows you to do more work in smaller, confined areas. Tires may be smaller on such tractors, however, and therefore the machine may be rated for carrying smaller loads.
  • TLB - A TLB tractor is one that comes with pre-attached front end loaders and backhoe diggers. These models will be more expensive and more sizable, but if you were planning on purchasing those attachments, the combination may save you money.

Commercial farmers who grow large amounts of crops need equipment that can help them maintain their fields, plant seeds, and harvest produce. Since farmers usually need more equipment that the typical gardener, they can often qualify for bulk discounts from surplus tractor dealers. Tractor dealers also supply retail stores that sell directly to gardeners and smaller farmers. Tractor dealers often carry a wide variety of supplies and accessories that can be used on the farm. Not only do they have industrial sized tractors that can plow fields and cut plants, but many of them also have repair parts and accessories. Retail stores purchase their equipment from surplus suppliers because they can get deep discounts for placing bulk orders. They then increase the price, and sell the items to consumers. Large scale farmers who use lots of heavy duty machines can also benefit from these discounted prices when they place large orders. When choosing a discount distributor, you should consider what manufacturers the companies work with. This will help you determine whether they have the types of heavy duty equipment that you want. You can also request a catalog from the supply company. This will give you an accurate view of what accessories, farm equipment, and repair parts they have for sale. You want to make sure that you purchase products from a reliable dealer that provides excellent services and affordable prices. You can do this by using a search engine to locate agriculture product reviews that allow customers to post their experiences online.
