Transmission Terms to Know
One of the most important parts of a car besides the engine is the transmission. In simple terms, the transmission system regulates the power of a internal combustible engine to the wheel and tires of a car. It is made up of speed changing gears and a propeller shaft. Keeping a transmission system well maintained is a good way to avoid costly repairs. There are different parts of a transmission and some of the more common terms are listed below.
Gearbox – The part of a transmission where the different gears and gear trains provide speed and torque transfer from the engines to the wheels.
Transmission Fluid – A thick fluid that is used to keep the gears in the gearbox well oiled so that they continue to function properly. Transmission fluid has different properties than oil fluid and often appears slightly reddish.
Transmission Flush – A repair job that is done to a transmission where all of the old fluid and buildup is removed from the transmission parts and new fluid is filtered back in.
Manual Transmission – A type of transmission system where the gears have to be manually shifted using the propeller shaft. In automobiles, manual transmissions come in five or six speed transmissions. They are less expensive to repair than automatic transmissions.
Automatic Transmission – A type of transmission system where the automobile itself changes the gears as it increases in speed. While this makes driving easier for drivers, it does carry an increased cost when it comes time to repair the system.
