Transmission Terms to Know

One of the most important parts of a car besides the engine is the transmission. In simple terms, the transmission system regulates the power of a internal combustible engine to the wheel and tires of a car. It is made up of speed changing gears and a propeller shaft. Keeping a transmission system well maintained is a good way to avoid costly repairs. There are different parts of a transmission and some of the more common terms are listed below.

  • Gearbox – The part of a transmission where the different gears and gear trains provide speed and torque transfer from the engines to the wheels.
  • Transmission Fluid – A thick fluid that is used to keep the gears in the gearbox well oiled so that they continue to function properly. Transmission fluid has different properties than oil fluid and often appears slightly reddish.
  • Transmission Flush – A repair job that is done to a transmission where all of the old fluid and buildup is removed from the transmission parts and new fluid is filtered back in.
  • Manual Transmission – A type of transmission system where the gears have to be manually shifted using the propeller shaft. In automobiles, manual transmissions come in five or six speed transmissions. They are less expensive to repair than automatic transmissions.
  • Automatic Transmission – A type of transmission system where the automobile itself changes the gears as it increases in speed. While this makes driving easier for drivers, it does carry an increased cost when it comes time to repair the system.

Automobile and transmission repair parts are often necessary to keep cars running properly for long periods of time. Even the best cars experience mechanical malfunctions from time to time. By replacing the clutch, gear shift, flywheel, and radiator cover, car owners can extend the lives of their vehicles inexpensively. New and used repair parts for engines, A/C condensers, flywheel generators, manual transmissions, and gaskets are often available through car part suppliers. Since there are so many different types of vehicles in production, you might need to contact several stores to find the options that you need to keep your engine and transmission working properly. If you know what types of repair parts that you need for your manual transmission or automobile engine, then contact retail stores in your area. Ask different specialty stores whether they keep the thermal exchangers, electronic kits, heat transfer, and clutch cases in stock. Finding a store that has these items in stock means that you can purchase them immediately to start rebuilding the malfunctioning equipment in your car. If you have an older car, then you might find cheap parts from local junk yards. They often have caps, torque converters, gear shifts, and other parts that are not currently in production. Don’t feel restricted to the stores and junk yards in your area. Online stores can give you access to the items that you need to keep your engine cool and transmission working smoothly. You might even get a better price from an online shop than you would a store in your area. Compare prices to get the best deal.
