Popular Trap and Skeet Shooting Terms

Trap and skeet shooting are popular sports for many shooters. Participants may appreciate the challenge, competition, or practice for hunting provided by this sport. Many trap and skeet shooters are also general shooting enthusiasts. Being familiar with common terminology related to these and other types of shooting can be useful for selecting a range or gun club.

  • Clay Pigeon - A common term for the targets used in trap and skeet shooting.
  • Olympic Trap - A shooting competition structured with several different machines firing targets. This ensures that all participants are faced with equally difficult rounds.
  • Double Trap - A shooting competition structured such that participants have multiple clay targets launched at the same time.
  • Wobble Trap - A shooting style in which the firing machine moves up and down as well as side to side. This introduces an additional variable, and is much more demanding of shooters.
  • Plinking - Casual, informal target shooting. Participants often use improvised targets.
  • Steel Targets - Targets which can be used multiple times. They will often rotate down after being shot, and can be reset between uses.
  • B27 Target - A popular target for many shooting enthusiasts. B27 targets have several different subcategories, but they are typically silhouette shaped. They can be found pre-printed, or as printable image documents. These are excellent options for indoor ranges or clubs where moving targets are not allowed.
  • Bullseye Target - A standard shooting target. Some are printed on material which flecks away when shot, making the bullet hole much more visible at a distance. These can also be used for scoring in competitive shooting.

Trap and skeet are recreational and competitive activities where clay objects are shot while in the air. Bird hunters can visit trap and skeet ranges in order to imitate shooting animals in flight. Competitions are held year-round, and even in the Olympics to see who has the best shooting aim. Trap and skeet ranges provide a safe environment for target practice using rifles and pistols. There are sports clubs that will rent guns to use, as well as safety equipment. Shooters will use rifles and pistols to shoot clay targets in an open field. Goggles, ear plugs, and other items for protection can be bought or rented at trap and skeet ranges, ensuring shooters proper protection while practicing. Other common items, such as ammunition and shell pouches, can also be found at many trap and skeet ranges. Trap and skeet ranges will help trained hunters practice their rifle aiming. Beginners can learn how to properly hold and fire a rifle, while experienced hunters can practice to maintain their accuracy. Those with previous experience can decide whether they want to enter competitions to test their skills against others. Calling a trap and skeet range can help shooters determine what hours they're open, if they have a store on site, and what clay targets they use. Some may even offer lessons for beginners. Trap and skeet sporting clubs may offer competitions for club members. Employees can answer questions on how to sign up for a tournament, and what is required to become an eligible participant.
