A lot of work can be done to customize a pickup truck. From lift kits to engine upgrades, when it comes to truck accessories, the sky is the limit. Adding a canopy, cap or shell on the bed of the pickup not only protects the property within, but adding this accessory can raise the value of the vehicle. In order to have a better, more comprehensive understanding of these toppers, we must first understand the terminology associated with them. Below are several terms to know when looking to purchase a canopy, cap or shell.

  • Truck Canopy - A canopy is a soft covering, usually made of some sort of heavy duty fabric such as canvas. The canopy acts as a sort of garage or carport in order to protect the vehicle from the elements. A truck canopy can also be a hard or soft cap or shell.
  • Tonneau Cover - A cap which sits on top of and covers the back bed of a pickup. It can be hard, manufactured from fiberglass or other durable material, or soft in order to roll the cover to gain access to the bed. Some tonneau covers are custom made to match the color and design of the pickup truck.
  • Rail Caps - Hard plastic or diamond plate aluminum caps which cover and protect the truck bed railings to prevent scrapes and chips from forming as a result of side-loading and unloading.
  • Teardrop Trailer - A compact travel trailer consisting of a sleeping cabin and kitchen area. Many models of this camper trailer are capable of sleeping 2 to 3 people.

    Truck caps, shells and soft top canopy covers are available in various colors and styles.
