Terms Associated with Grain and Fertilizer Trucking

Rural areas rely on truck companies to transport grain and fertilizer to keep their farm working. Animals feed on hay and corn, and crops must be fertilized on time to grow properly. Some commercial cargo and freight hauling companies specialize in grain and fertilizer shipping, as well as other products related to the agriculture industry. Here are some common terms associated with the heavy-duty trucks and equipment used in grain and fertilizer transport.

  • Custom Grain Hauler – A for-hire grain hauler that works directly with the farm owner to meet his shipping needs. His services may include hauling grain from the field to an elevator, or from elevator to elevator.
  • Bulk Cargo – An unbound, unpackaged cargo. Grain is typically classified as bulk cargo.
  • Freight Broker – A freight broker can arrange for a load of fertilizer or grain to be hauled, by matching a small shipper with carriers.
  • Gross Vehicle Weight – The maximum combined weight allowed of a truck and the shipment being hauled.
  • Hopper Bottom – A cargo container used for grain or fertilizer that can discharge its load through an opening in the bottom.
  • Bridge Formula – A calculation required by federal and state governments to regulate the amount of weight that can be put on each vehicle axle, and how far apart the axles must be to carry that weight.
  • Accessorial – Additional fees related to grain and fertilizer hauling outside of the standard shipping costs. Accessorial fees may include fuel surcharges, arrival notification and insurance.
