Terms to Know About Trucking Heavy Hauling

Although everyday items can be moved with a car or truck sometimes a company or private individual requires very large equipment to be hauled a long distance. Such equipment includes tractors, concrete pipes, cranes, mobile homes and more. Hauling companies have specialized transportation such as trailers and flatbeds to accommodate such needs. If you are need of truck heavy hauling services these are some terms you may need to know.

  • Logistics – Freight transportation of heavy equipment requires planning, safety considerations and permits. Logistic planning will require taking accurate notes of the weight and size of the cargo as well as complete documentation of the best route to be driven.
  • Warehouse – A warehouse is a large simple structure that is able to accommodate bulk equipment easily. Warehouses typically have large doors for hauling trucks and flatbeds to fit into.
  • Flatbeds – Flatbeds trucks have completely open platforms that are hauled by a large truck. Flatbeds can haul bulky, oddly shaped equipment such as tractors and backhoes.
  • LTL – LTL, or less than truckload, hauling is also offered by many trucking companies. Companies that offer LTL services will haul smaller loads of merchandise and cargo.
  • Courier – A courier service offers transportation of smaller items such as packages, payroll and money. Couriers often offer express services as well.
  • Bid – For hauling projects needed done by government or large corporate entities, the people in need of the hauling will request bids from a variety of service providers to get the best price possible.
  • Freight broker – A freight broker can be hired to find a trucking company that can complete your required shipping needs on time for a good price.

The trucking industry covers a broad range services for many different businesses. A trucking company could specialize in primarily hauling heavy equipment. Some freight companies focus on other forms of cargo or merchandise, such as food. Business is a never ending for truckers, and some drive 24 hours a day to haul freight and equipment in bulk. Time is money for all business, and a freight company works under the same principle. They hire people to work in the warehouse and load up trailers and flatbeds. From that point it is the driver’s duty to transport the merchandise as quickly as possible to the destination. The dispatch keeps in contact with the driver to make sure the cargo is going to make it to its destination in time. Any problems with the truck or the motor get relayed back to dispatch so an adequate plan can be made to fulfill the order. Some companies offer express courier services. The size and weight of the cargo has to meet the standards of the federal law to protect the roads and highways. Being a carrier of more than the federal regulated weight can cause a fine for the trucking company and possibly the driver. Trucking companies will sometimes push the limit and try to make the freight as heavy as possible. A trucking brokerage company does not own the trucks or the flatbeds that are being used to transport goods. The broker’s job is to do the rest of the work scheduling orders and making sure they are fulfilled. This includes the hiring of staff to implement the orders that are arranged and earning a commission. The owner of the vehicles doesn’t always have the expertise to manage the logistics of a successful operation.
