Popular Terms for Uniforms

Uniforms have various uses and purposes for schools, military services, sports teams and more. Uniforms are used for professional occupations in the case of police or nurses, who will wear scrubs to the hospital. Many children will don school uniforms for academic purposes. Soccer, football and baseball players all wear jerseys to represent their teams. Men and women alike work in many different occupations and must wear fitted uniforms. Whether you serve in the army, navy or basketball team you’ll be wearing a uniform. Due to the prevalence of this clothing, there are entire stores and businesses dedicated to providing wears for nurses and team jerseys, not to mention military fatigues or uniforms for cheap. To clear up a few misunderstandings about uniforms there are a number of terms that will help you understand the necessity of them.

  • Alterations - A change or alteration in a uniform may be necessary to show rank, as in a military case, or may change depending on the position of a doctor or nurse.
  • Battledress - Better known as fatigues, these uniforms are used for camouflage when in a battle zone, amidst combat. These vary greatly from the ‘display’ dress or formal wear that is used at parades and other public functions.
  • Dress Uniform - Is a rather formal military uniform worn at ceremonies, official receptions and other special occasions. The designs are distinct to the service, whether it’s the Army, Navy or other service.

Uniforms can be used for many different professions, whether you are a chef, mascot or cheerleader. Scrubs are used rather prevalently for dentist as well as other medical professionals. A uniform will give you a professional and dignified look that is used for many different occupations.

Uniforms make up an invaluable material in the fabric of society, connoting an individual's membership in a some kind of group, team, or specific role. Uniforms depend on specific and recognizable aspects of design expected to identifiable to anyone with knowledge of the occupation or role. Men and women wear uniforms to identify membership in a governmental organization, such as the military, or any kind of private organization. When people gain entrance to some kind of team or group with a distinctive uniform, one of the first activities to be performed consists of fitting people for this garment. Most basically, uniforms indicate either military membership, such as army or navy roles, or military-like organizations like the police. Wearing police or army uniforms without permission can lead to either prosecution or at least stigmatization. Reduced risks stem from wearing other kinds of uniforms, which may connote professional and work skills but not special status under a government. In fact, sports teams commonly encourage fans to wear cheap variations on their distinctive uniforms. Fans typically go in distinctive athletic outfits to football, soccer, baseball, and basketball matches. Mascots might also be outfitted in uniforms. Hospitals and schools can also be included as common purveyors of uniforms. In medical settings, nurses and doctors often wear scrubs, or other distinctive outfits. As opposed to adults, children will likely only wear uniforms in such settings as schools, where outfits might be generally issued, or only for specific roles like cheerleaders. Costume stores, meanwhile, often sell stylized versions, such as nurses' scrubs or chefs' outfits. The wide variety inherent in uniforms means that information on this subject must be specific to the particular function it performs. In any event, uniforms comprise an invaluable part of society.
