How to Upholster Furniture

Any family with young children or pets can tell you about how impossible it is to keep the interior of automobiles clean. Not to mention the couch in the living room. The truth is that instead of spending a fortune buying a new auto or a new couch, oftentimes severe stains to fabric that cannot be removed through cleaning can be replaced by upholstering. This affordable service can be installed by an upholstering professional, but even beginners can do simple pieces of furniture such as a chair. This is a short guide on how to upholster furniture.

  • If all attempts at cleaning have failed, then get rid of that old fabric. Take a pair of scissors and strip away the old fabric from the chair. You should leave behind the seat, pad or springs. All you want to remove is the outer layer of fabric.
  • Next, select the new fabric you want to replace it with. It can be anything, from cotton to leather. Just make sure you buy enough fabric. You will need enough to cover the seat cushion and extra to staple down around the bottom.
  • Place your fabric over the seat of the chair, and then turn the seat upside down. Pull the fabric tight, especially if you are using leather because it will stretch out more. Using a staple gun, attach the fabric to the interior area of the wooden seat support in the same way the original fabric was attached. Repeat this step with any other fabric covered parts of the chair.
  • If you would rather use a professional, call three or four and get an estimate of how much it will cost before choosing one. This is a good way to ensure you are getting professional service at the best possible price.

Over time, furniture such as couches and chairs may require some maintenance or repair services.People often contract the services of upholsterers for new padding, springs, or webbing. Upholsterers are often employed at furniture stores or they may own their own business. They can change fabric, clean leather, replace auto seats, provide custom services, and offer additional repairs. Each upholsterer may have a specific specialty, such as supplying upholstery for the auto industry or the furniture industry. Many professionals will come to your home to perform services. Others welcome customers to their store fronts, where the furniture may be left to be serviced. Customers can also purchase their own upholstery supplies at a fabric or craft store. A person with the right tools may be able to change the padding on a dining room chair, for example, or affix new fabric or vinyl to seats. Upholsterers are needed because over time, fabrics can become worn, dirty, or torn. These professionals can refurbish furniture, drapes, and auto seats by employing various tools, supplies, and textiles. Many companies offer free estimates for customers, whether the job involves cleaning leather or installing new webbing. There are many supplies used in the process, from foam and buttons to cleaning products and springs. Sometimes a tear can occur in fabric, and the whole piece must be replaced. Other times, an entire new set of seat pads needs to be installed due to an interior design job. Customers can head to their local furniture or fabric company store to seek out advice on particular upholstery jobs. Professionals may be on staff to provide services, or at least give interior decorating advice regarding color coordination. Customers should visit a few upholsterers to compare rates and ensure they are getting the most affordable services.
