Popular Upholstery Supply Terms

Upholstering is a worthwhile activity that can allow you to create a whole new look in your home for the price of supplies. Many wholesale stores carry textiles that can match the style and feel that you are striving for in your home. If you are looking to enhance your residence and feel that taking up this activity is right for you, here are some terms that you should be familiar with.

  • Colorway – This is the variety and range of colors for a specific fabric.
  • Deck – This is the stiff, resilient platform underneath a seat cushion on a sofa. It is usually covered by plain, cotton muslin. A deck that is designed well will prevent those who sit on the cushions from feeling the springs in the chair.
  • Fabric Backing – This is a special extra layer that is added to the backs of certain materials, like chenille or silk, for covering furniture. Because of their natural give and delicate nature they will sag and stretch without support. Cotton canvas and muslin are good backers. Many wholesale stores have yards of these supplies that are marked upholstery weight and are a good option for this type of work.
  • Gimp – This is a type of fancy trim that resembles ribbon. It is used primarily to cover up the tacks where the cloth meets the exposed frame.
  • Welting – This is a covered cord that is sewn around the outside of the upholstery seam. It is commonly covered in the textile that the rest of the couch has been covered in. This is used to create a clean, crisp edge to the silhouette.

Upholstery is the process of applying new fabric, leather, or padding to both furniture and automobiles. To complete their jobs effectively, upholsterers need the aid of proper tools and supplies. Some of the more popular supplies include tacks, foam padding, and more materials. However, these materials can become more specific, depending on the job that the craftsman is working on. For instance, if they are working on a restoration piece, they may need a specific textile, or they may use a particular shade of velvet for the seat of the chair. Upholstery has a long history in the tradition of creating new furniture, and in association with interior decorating. It is also a trade that has altered over the years. The craft is thought to have originated with tent making. It then moved into creating drapes and wall hangings, and expanded into furniture, headboards, and eventually automobiles. Today, upholsterers are commonly used in restoration projects, fixing springs in couches, draperies around beds, and the padding on antique chairs. To accomplish their tasks as economically as possible, upholsterers usually try to find access to inexpensive supplies, fabric and textiles. Replacing leather or canvas, or finding the right tools for each job can add up. Connections in the industry for access to these cheaper supplies are essential to a lucrative business plan. Find out more information on upholstery and upholstery supplies when looking online. There are a number of sites that can explain the difference between different tools, the types of tacks used in chairs, and the replacement of vinyl with hypoallergenic materials.
