Upholstery and Carpet Cleaning Terms

Cleaning the upholstery in your home or car can be difficult. Steam machines make the job easier and are readily available for rent. Whether you are using a steam machine or doing the job by hand, here are some common terms you should be familiar with.

  • Acrylic Polymer – Acrylic polymers help fabrics resist stains and dirt.
  • Builder – Builders are added to many cleaning agents to increase their efficiency. These materials can lower the hardness of water, can raise or preserve the alkalinity of the cleaner, and can help prevent dirt and grime from exiting the cleaner once it has been collected. Phosphates are common builders.
  • Caustic – Caustic materials have a high alkalinity. They can cause skin irritation and can even damage leather or other delicate surfaces.
  • Cleansers – Cleansers contains surfactants and abrasives. They can be a liquid or a powder. Many cleansers also have bleach in them, so be cautious when using them on colored chairs or couches.
  • Colorfast – A rug or furniture fabric that is colorfast will retain its color when wet. Test your upholstery, carpets, and rugs for colorfastness before applying any liquid.
  • Corrosion Inhibitor – A corrosion inhibitor protects surfaces from deterioration. Many detergents have a corrosion inhibitor.
  • Enzymes – Enzymes are used in many carpet and upholstery cleaners because they are effective in eliminating difficult organic stains. Grass and blood are common targets for cleaners containing enzymes.
  • Pherobloc – This chemical agent in used in many pet cleaning products. Pherobloc removes the scent of an animal’s leavings. If this scent is not removed, the animal may go there again.
  • Surfactants – This is the key component in a detergent. Surfactants allow the cleaning agent to spread over and permeate a surface. They also help remove dirt and stains.

Have you ever found a stain on a piece of furniture that just would not come out, no matter how much you scrubbed? You probably thought you only had two choices: either toss it out or live with the stains. There is another option available- Upholstery cleaners take up the job where a laundry mat stops. Many of these businesses handle more than just chairs, couches, and sofas. They may clean a customer’s carpets and rugs, and even their automobile’s interior. Because of their training and experience, professional cleaners are very successful in removing stubborn stains. No matter the fabric, from leather to suede, they know the correct and efficient way to clean soiled furniture. Many of these companies work for commercial customers, cleaning offices. There are residential cleaners as well. With the help of these workers, common household furniture like leather seating can appear new again. Mobile detailers drive around town to assist messy cars. From dashboards to seats, they remove the evidence of commuting. Do-it-yourselfers who are short on funds can still succeed in the challenge of upholstery cleaning. Many places rent commercial-grade equipment, such as steam vacuums. These machines keep the homeowner off their knees by taking on the carpet scrubbing themselves. There are also various chemicals and solutions created to remove difficult stains. You may have to try multiple products before seeing improvement in certain types of stains, such as wine and mud. Whether you hire professionals or go it alone, your furniture's fabric will thank you.
