Urology doctors specialize in the diagnosis, care and treatment of conditions that affect the male and female genital organs and the urinary tract. Prior to being examined by a urologist, it may be helpful to know the meaning of several terms that may be discussed during the visit.

  • Bladder – The urinary bladder is a hollow organ located in the pelvic cavity that collects urine before it is excreted.
  • Prostate – A walnut-sized gland in males that may become enlarged, but can be corrected through surgery.
  • Kidneys – A pair of organs that help the body maintain proper water and electrolyte balance, and filter waste. A urologist may be consulted to treat several conditions that affect the kidneys, including kidney stones.
  • Vasectomy – A vasectomy is a surgical procedure performed on males to cause sterilization. It may be performed by a doctor as an in-patient or outpatient operation. A urologist can also reverse the procedure should a patient request it.
  • Catheter – A catheter is a tube used to release or inject fluids into the body. A doctor may recommend or require a catheter to treat a condition that affects the urinary tract.
  • Diuretic – To treat high blood pressure or fluid retention, a urology doctor may prescribe a diuretic, which increases the amount of water in the urine and helps to remove excess fluid from the body.
