Useful Terms about Vacuum Cleaner Supplies

Vacuum cleaner supplies are distributed worldwide. Some of the supplies available are canister replacement bags, beater brushes, hose attachments, and motor belts. While many of these supplies are available in local appliance stores, many are also sold online. Here are a few helpful terms to be familiar with when dealing with vacuum cleaner supplies and units.

  • HEPA Filter – Also known as a high-efficiency particulate air filter, this part is often used on modern vacuum cleaner units. It helps by removing small particles of dirt, dust, and debris from the air, when vacuuming. These filters have fiberglass mats that trap particles.
  • Beater Brush – This piece is also known as a beater bar, and it is commonly used on upright vacuum cleaners. This brush is long and rigid, and generally found at the mouth or opening of the unit. It spins and beats the carpet to stir up debris that is then sucked into the machine.
  • Canister Vacuum – These units used to be more common in the past, but have been replaced mostly by upright units. A canister vacuum is one that has a motor, bag and filtering system that is housed in a canister body. A hose is attached to the canister, and a suction tip or head is found on the hose.
  • Cord Hook – A plastic hook that is mounted and fixed on the back of most upright units. While one hook is typically found at the top, one is mounted at the base as well. This way the cord can be wrapped and stored around the hooks.
  • Hose Socks – These are fabric socks that are placed over the hoses of vacuum cleaners. The purpose is to protect the walls and furnishings from any scuffs that the hose might cause.

Using your vacuum cleaner on a regular basis is a great way to keep your home and carpet clean. If you use your vacuum cleaner often, it is important to take proper care of it. Store your vacuum in an upright position when not in use. If you leave it laying down on the floor instead of upright, it can be stepped on and damaged. It is also important to wrap up the cord so that no one trips over it. Make sure to stock up on vacuum supplies. Keep plenty of vacuum bags handy. Empty the bags frequently because it can be a fire hazard if the bag becomes too full. Some models may use a canister instead of a bag. Make sure to dump out the canister often as well. When vacuuming your rug or floor, switch on your machine and then use the foot pedal to recline the base of the vacuum to help suck up dust and dirt. Other parts of the vacuum are useful as well. Attachments and supplies such as the hose are great for reaching dust in high places or in small corners. If a standard vacuum doesn't meet all of your household needs, wet dry vacuums and steam cleaners are sold at a more expensive price point. These devices can help to get heavy stains out of a carpet. Cheaper cleaning tools include carpet sweepers, which can be used to pick up quick crumbs and portable hand vacuums that can be used for travel or to clean your porch. Make sure to maintain your appliance. The belt, beater bar, motor and filter on your device may need replacing at some point. Smoke or odd noises are a sign that it may be time to order a replacement part.
