Imporant Terms about Valet Services

Valet services are frequently used for special events, such as weddings, parties, and executive functions. For a reasonable rate, they can offer a way to manage the traffic at restaurants, hotels, and other venues where a lot of parking area is needed. As you research valet services and their listed rates, you may encounter some terms you may not know, so let's define some of them below.

  • Valet parking - A service where an attendant, called a valet, parks a customer's car for them, usually for a small fee. Employed as an everyday function for businesses or at one-time special events, valets save customers the time and hassle of locating parking spaces for their automobiles. In general, the customer leaves the automobile key with the valet, who returns it when the customer is ready to retrieve their car.
  • Coat check - An area or room where patrons can temporarily store their coats or other belongings. Also called a coatroom. For an extra fee, valet services often can provide coat check in addition to their other duties.
  • Stack parking - A type of parking arrangement in which limited space is maximized by placing automobiles directly behind one another. Because this leaves the cars in front unable to move, it is important for the valet to retain the keys to all the automobiles parked in this manner.
  • Carport - A type of parking structure, often formed by a roof attached to the side of a building. Unlike garages, carports are not fully enclosed.
  • Parking garage - The generic term for a building dedicated to providing parking space for cars. Also called a parking deck and a parking ramp.
  • Parallel parking - A method of parking cars in which the automobiles are arranged in a single row, front to back, parallel to the curb.
