Vet Hospital Terms

Having a pet is a big responsibility. If you are going to own any animal from a standard dog or cat to a larger pet like a horse or tropical bird, you will need to be prepared to take your pet for routine vet visits. You also should know where the nearest emergency animal hospital is if your pet gets injured during off hours. Being familiar with pet health care terms can be helpful.

  • Holistic Medicine - Non-drug related treatment that focuses more on natural supplements and spirituality.
  • Vaccine - An inoculation to protect against an illness.
  • Cystitis - Bladder information or a bladder infection. This type of inflammation can effect pets as well as people.
  • Pet Insurance - Health insurance that you can obtain for your dog or cat to help pay for medical visits.
  • Veterinarian - A type of clinician who focuses on one disease or subject, like large or household animals. You sometimes will need a referral from a primary vet clinic to see a specialist.
  • 24 Hour Hospital - An animal hospital that never closes so that you have a place to bring your pet to see a doctor in-case of an extreme emergency that can not wait until normal business hours. Similar to an emergency room for humans.
  • Private Practice - A medical clinic run by one vet at a personal place of business. This vet is not part of a larger medical group or hospital.
  • Anesthesia - An analgesic used during surgery.
  • Shedding - When animals get rid of layers of fur or skin. Some animals do this to help with body heat regulation. Others do this only when ill.

Veterinary hospitals are invaluable to pet lovers. These emergency animal clinics provide medical support to dogs, cats and other types of animals in need of help. Most of these veterinary hospitals are run by trained doctors of medicine. These doctors know how to properly treat and care for sick animals, and they are generally passionate about what they do. They often provide pets with vaccines and holistic healing treatments. These trained veterinarians are generally comfortable working with horses and birds, as well as dogs and cats. Some veterinary hospitals are open 24 hours a day. These animal clinics provide emergency health care to pets in need of it around the clock. They have surgery specialists on staff at all times to help even the sickest of animals. They also have insurance specialists on hand to help families finance any necessary surgeries or unforeseen expenses. Sometimes the doctors who work at these veterinary hospitals open private practices of their own. Through a referral process, they build a base of satisfied patients and customers, and they often establish a rapport with their customers. These private vets are often just as skilled as the veterinarians who work in animal hospitals. Their services are often slightly less costly. So, if your pet only needs a minor check up or vaccine, you may want to consider coming to one of these vets. On the other hand, if your pet is seriously ill or has been injured, you may want to go to an emergency veterinary hospital. The hospital staff should be able to see to it that your pet regains its health in no time!
