Common Veterinarian Equipment Terminology
Veterinarians and animal hospitals play a huge role in the lives of pet and livestock owners. These professionals use a number of surgical and medical instruments in their line of work. Here are some important terms that are related to this field.
Doppler – This is a piece of equipment that an animal clinic can use to screen for hypertension in animals. It is also used to monitor blood pressure in surgery and check for intact blood vessels after accidents, trauma and before amputation. It is particularly efficient with smaller animals, like cats. It is non-invasive and is more accurate than similar techniques, like oscillometric techniques.
Electrocardiographic Measuring – This is the use of an electrocardiogram, or EKG, to record the electrical activity of the patient’s heart over a period of time. Small electrodes are placed on the skin that measure rate and regularity of the heartbeat. This measurement can detect any defects in the heart and will indicate if surgical intervention is required.
Autoclave – A machine that is used to sterilize veterinarian equipment and supplies. It uses a saturated steam that is highly pressurized. The instruments are put in the steam for 15 minutes, sanitizing and sterilizing them effectively.
Oximeter – A veterinary supply that is used in an animal clinic to measure the oxygen saturation in an animal’s blood. When it is in the skin, it changes in blood volume and produces a graph. Usually, if surgery is required it will be attached to a medical monitor to supply the hospital staff with the oxygenation levels and heart rate at all times.
Refactometer – In veterinary medicine, this is an instrument that measures the amount of total plasma protein in a single blood or urine sample.
Veterinarian equipment and supply distributors sell their products to large veterinary facilities and supply stores. When clients purchase large orders of medical and surgical equipment or medicine supplies, they get bulk discounts that make the price per item cheaper. This helps veterinarians operate their businesses without paying retail prices for all of the stretchers, scales, ultrasound machines, monitors, and warmers that they need. There are many different types of equipment that veterinarians might want to purchase from a supplier. Not all of the items are surgical or medical in nature. Vets, for instance, need certain types of furniture. This might include tubs, tables, and cabinets. They might also need lighting so that they can see properly during sensitive surgeries. Much of the equipment that the doctors need, however, is directly related to medical or surgical matters. Most of these companies will have scanners, X-ray, electrocardiographic, spirometer, and radiographic machines. They might also have common medical items such as ventilators, pumps, microscopes, and autoclaves. When searching for used oximeters, refactometers, and gas ventilators, be sure that you purchase them from reliable dealers. Few companies offer warranties for used products, so you must make sure that the company only sells products that will function properly for several years. You can learn more about the medicines and veterinarian supplies that wholesale companies offer by searching online for their web sites. Most companies have online catalogs that let you browse their inventory easily. This will help you identify sources for all of the supplies and equipment that you need.
