Video Equipment Terminology

Video equipment can be either bought or rented for the purpose of recording events into a media format that can later be viewed at digital video. Once video was primarily used on cassettes that stored the images, but with advanced technology, video is created and transferred digitally. Below are some common terms used with video equipment.

  • HD – High definition is a video system with a higher resolution than standard definition video.
  • Digital Camera - A camera that operates using a digital medium to store its images. Digital cameras are useful for being able to upload images from the camera onto the computer.
  • Film Camera - The traditional kind of camera that requires film to store images. Film cameras are used by professionals with the camera and movie industry.
  • Camcorder – Camcorders are used to record moving images. Originally, they were a great deal smaller than motion picture cameras, and their ease of portability popularized their use. Many great home movies and events, such as weddings and birthday parties have been recorded using a camcorder. Most camcorders manufactured today are digital, and they have a flip screen. This screen flips out during use, but when not is use is safely secured against the body of the camcorder.
  • Editing Software – With the rise of the digital age, most editing can also be done digitally. Professional companies use expensive software programs to add additional graphics and special effects to create video products. However, there is also a market for editing software available to consumers that can perform basic photo editing.
  • Production Software – A type of editing software that is used to make videos and movies. It can tie different tracks together, edit clips and even overlay audio tracks over the original video track.
